MY REVIEW:

“Afloat” is a somewhat dark tale about the residents and workers of a floating apartment community who become isolated from the rest of the world due to the simultaneous sabotage of the complex and a monumental natural disaster. With supernatural elements thrown in for good measure, the story is one that will hold the interest of most readers and leave them with points to ponder.

It does not take very long of the enforced isolation and rapidly deteriorating conditions  for the stranded men and women to begin to show their true selves. Their predicament can in some ways be viewed as a test that some will pass with high marks and others will fail miserably. Danielle Clement is one resident who is forced to make a choice that will determine the future of herself and her young son and Vance Nolan must remain strong and stand his ground no matter what comes against him. At the end it all comes down to the purest meaning of love and the willingness to love others to that degree.

“Afloat” may not be my favorite novel by Erin Healy but I did find it to have strong characters and a powerful message. Her skillful writing style established a background atmosphere of danger and doom that I experienced along with her characters. The story is told from more than one point of view and several flashbacks into Vance’s past helped connect all the dots for me. I particularly liked Zeke and his insights but Vance carried the weight of the story.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

AfloatWho will you trust when dark waters rise?

Eagle’s Talon is an architectural marvel—shining residential units afloat in a protected cove of the gorgeous Rondeau River. The project is nearly complete, partially occupied, and ready to make investors rich when a sinkhole gives way. Then torrential rains and a flood leave a ragged collection of builders, investors, and residents stranded in one floating building, cut off from the rest of the world.

They’re bitterly divided over what to do next.

Architect Vance Nolan insists they should sit tight and wait for rescue. Developer Tony Dean wants to strike out into the darkness. And single mom Danielle Clement, desperate to protect her young son, Simeon, struggles to hold their motley band together.

Power failure, a pall of unnatural daytime darkness, explosions in the distance, then a murder ratchet tensions to a boiling point. But Danielle’s young son, Simeon, has spotted something strange underwater—beautiful, shifting lights in the dark water below.

In this watery world where everyone’s secrets will eventually come to light, salvation may mean more than just getting out alive.

Another stunning exploration of the human spirit and supernatural possibilities from best-selling author Erin Healy.
