We were up this morning at 4:00 a.m. in order to arrive at our church in time to unload the truck from Angel Food Ministries for this month’s distribution. Our guys unloaded approximately 12-1/4 tons of bulk food on pallets, counted it out to make sure it was counted properly when it went on the truck, then reloaded a little over half of the food to send on to the next drop point. Once the truck left, we separated the food for the other five host sites that pick up at our drop then sorted the food we had left to distribute from our church.

Angel Food distribution day is a lot of hard work but we also have fun visiting and getting to know each other better as we work. It is also very satisfying to interact with the people from the other churches and with our customers. Many have become friends as they return each month.

Angel Food Ministries is a nationwide non-profit, non-denominational organization dedicated to providing grocery relief to communities throughout the United States. The food is all the same high quality you would purchase at a grocery store. There are no second-hand items, no damaged or out-dated goods, no dented cans without labels, no day-old breads and no produce that is almost too ripe.
Each month’s menu is different than the previous month and consists of both fresh and frozen items with an average retail value of between $45 and $75. This menu can be purchased for $30. Additional specialty boxes can be bought for approximately $20. An average of three specials per month will vary but usually are a variety of meat boxes containing steaks, pork chops, ribs, sausages, chicken tenders, boneless skinless chicken breasts, ready-to- heat meals, etc. Orders are placed once a month and picked up on a set distribution date.
The program aims at filling in the gaps for those people who may bring in too much money to qualify for government assistance but who aren’t making enough to support themselves and their families. The program is ideal for single parents, the working poor and senior citizens on a fixed income. Although these groups definitely benefit, the program is open to everyone – there are no applications or eligibility requirements.

The Breast Cancer site is having trouble getting enough people to click on their site daily to meet their quota of donating at least one free mammogram a day to an underprivileged woman. It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on “donating a mammogram” for free (pink window in the middle).
This doesn’t cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate mammogram in exchange for advertising.
Here’s the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

I have run across this several times and find the sentiments to be so true. I personally don’t think it applies just to “southern” friends but to all real friends in any location. I believe that if you have even one friend like this, you have truly been blessed!
FRIENDS: Never ask for food.
SOUTHERN REAL FRIENDS: Always bring the food. And lots of It.
FRIENDS: Will say “hello”.
SOUTHERN REAL FRIENDS: Will give you a big hug and a kiss. More than one.
FRIENDS: Call your parents Mr. and Mrs.
SOUTHERN REAL FRIENDS: Call your parents Mom and Dad, and hug and kiss them hello too.
FRIENDS: Have never seen you cry.
SOUTHERN REAL FRIENDS: Cry with you; and for you.
FRIENDS: Will eat at your dinner table and leave.
SOUTHERN REAL FRIENDS: Will spend hours there, talking, laughing, and just being together. Then do the dishes before leaving.
FRIENDS: Know a few things about you.
SOUTHERN REAL FRIENDS: Could write a book with direct quotes from you. And most of the time know you better than you do yourself.
FRIENDS: Will leave you behind if that’s what the crowd is doing.
SOUTHERN REAL FRIENDS: Will kick the back-ends of the whole crowd that left you. Then walk beside you in the front of the crowd.
FRIENDS: Would knock on your door.
SOUTHERN REAL FRIENDS: Walk right in and say, “I’m home!” If you are not home they will wait.
FRIENDS: Are for a while.
SOUTHERN REAL FRIENDS: Are for life. And then some.

While I am contemplating which book to review first, I thought I’d share the hard proof of my reading obsession. These bookshelves are in three rooms and contain only the books I have decided to keep for the moment. I recently bought the new double bookcase only to find I had it almost filled by the time I loaded most of the books that wouldn’t fit the other bookcases. You will probably notice that all the books are two layers deep. Most of them are Christian fiction.

My earliest memories include a fascination with the world of books. My mother tells of my returning from my first day of school complaining that I hadn’t learned to read yet. I suppose that I must have been told that I would learn to read after I went to school and imagined that it was something magic that happened by osmosis or the like. Fortunately (or unfortunately) the desire was there and the road to an obsession began.
During my elementary years, my two sisters and I were taken to the library where we had a limit of four books each. I think I read all of my books and theirs too. And that was in addition to those I was allowed to check out of the school library.
It would be a total disaster (in my mind) if I did not have a book available to read at all times. I cannot imagine life without books or at least something to read. I have been known to read shampoo bottles in the shower. I also seem to have an aversion to doing away with printed material, thus the stacks of magazines and paperbacks that threaten to bury me.
My books of choice at this time of my life are in the Christian fiction genre. I have been known to read almost anything available at the library but became uncomfortable with the increasingly explicit material in most novels. There are several authors I really enjoy but have given up because of the content.
My plan here is to discuss or review books I have recently read and enjoyed. I hope that you will join me in this journey. I am a totally new blogger so I am not too sure of what I am doing. Please be patient with me.
