Welcome to the Blog + Review Tour for No Unturned Stone by David James Warren, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!
MY REVIEW:
No Unturned Stone is the second book in a series of six co-written by a collaboration of three authors, two of them very well known for their own books. I agreed to review this book without having read the first one in the series and that was a mistake. For the first several chapters I was lost as the proverbial goose so please start with book one if you read this series. Fortunately as the narrative moved ahead there was enough background information for me to discern most of what was going on.
Those who love time travel, law enforcement, and suspense novels should love No Unturned Stone. Rembrandt Stone is an admirable character who has received a mysterious watch from his former boss and finds himself taken back in time where he has a chance to solve cold cases. Unfortunately everything he does in the past affects the future and he is clueless about what he should and shouldn’t do to prevent the lives of those he cares about from being irrevocably changed.
Despite not having read the first book I was soon caught up in Rembrandt’s story and did not want to put the book down until I reached its end. As can be expected with such talented authors the novel is very well written and engaging with a unique plot, excellent character development, plenty of action and suspense, and multiple surprises. The ending left me eager to know what would happen next so I can assure you that I plan to read the rest of this fun series but only after I go back and read book number one.
I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book provided by Just Read Tours. A favorable review was not required. All views expressed are my own.

But he did, and now ex-detective Rembrandt Stone is reaping the devastation of ignoring those words when he traveled back in time to solve the one case that had haunted his dreams.
Yes, he solved the crime. Yes, he saved lives. But Rembrandt returns to find the unthinkable has happened and his life has shattered.
There’s only one answer: break the rule again. Go back in time once more, fix what went wrong, save what went right, and yeah, in his spare time solve another brutal crime.
But it’s not so easy to change time, especially when time turns you into a target. And of course there’s the strong possibility if he goes again, he’ll never get back.

MY REVIEW:
Book three of Lynne Gentry’s The Carthage Chronicles series, “Valley of Decision” was a fitting conclusion to Lisbeth and Maggie’s time travel into third-century Carthage. There were times that I just wanted to close its covers and walk away – not because the writing wasn’t good or was difficult to read. No, I tend to be just a tad squeamish and I didn’t want to deal with events that I could see coming before the end. I pushed myself to read the entire book and was thankful that the events I feared were not described graphically but were tastefully written. Thank you Lynne.
Even more than the first two books of the series, “Valley of Decision” emphasized just how serious the decision to be a Christian could be during those tumultuous times. It sometimes required literally laying down one’s life for one’s beliefs or to protect others. I saw example after example of how the sacrificial and loving acts of early Christians, even toward their enemies influenced others for Christ and possibly even changed the course of history.
This is truly a book about decisions, both good and bad. Selfish and vengeful decisions that led to chaos, death, and disaster were vividly contrasted with decisions to love and forgive that led to healing and changed lives. “Valley of Decision” is a book to make its reader think about how our own decisions affect the people we come in contact each day. Can we live for Christ the same way here in our modern lives of comfort and plenty?

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Every choice has a consequence in the explosive conclusion to the Carthage Chronicles as Lisbeth returns to third-century Carthage for a thrilling final adventure.
Thirteen years ago, Lisbeth made an impossible decision—leave third-century Carthage and her husband Cyprian behind for good. She knew it was to protect her daughter Maggie, so Lisbeth gathered the strength to move on with her life.
All these years, Lisbeth has thrown herself into her work and raising her headstrong daughter, all to live up to the promise she made to Cyprian. But Maggie is sick of being protected. In an act of teenage rebellion Maggie decides to do what her mother can’t—secretly returning to the third century on a quest to bring her father back, leaving Lisbeth no choice but to follow.
With Maggie’s surprise arrival in Carthage, chaos ensues. She finds her grandmother on trial for murder and attempts to save her, but instead the diversion sparks a riot that nearly destroys the plagued city. Only one thing will appease the wrath of the new proconsul of Carthage: the death of the instigator.
Will Lisbeth arrive in time to save her daughter from the clutches of Rome? How can God possibly redeem such a slew of unwise decisions and deep regrets? Filled with heart-wrenching twists and riveting action, Valley of Decision brings the romantic adventure epic, The Carthage Chronicles, to an electrifying conclusion.

MY REVIEW:
A bit of time travel combined with a fictional tale based on actual historical facts is what the reader finds when she opens the pages of first “The Healer of Carthage” and now the greatly anticipated second volume of The Carthage Chronicles, “Return to Exile. A love story that spans the centuries, “Return to Exile” paints a graphic picture of the dangers faced by the early Christians in Roman Carthage. Surrounded on every side by deadly epidemics, power-seeking politicians, or disgruntled traitors, daily existence is a trial that takes nearly superhuman effort just to survive. Yet knowing the dangers, Dr. Lisbeth Hastings makes the choice to return, hoping her modern medical knowledge can make a difference in history.
Lynne Gentry has written a compelling novel that is at times difficult to read but equally difficult to put down. This story has it all – time travel, romance, danger, intrigue, a few surprises, and historical facts that are interwoven with a story of a faith to die for and characters willing to lay down their own lives for others. “Healer of Carthage” and now “Return to Exile” each have cliffhanger endings that leave the reader craving the next installment.
Lovers of Biblical fiction, this series is not to be missed. I am quite certain others will love it also.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Six years ago, impossible circumstances forced Dr. Lisbeth Hastings to leave behind the love of her life, not just in another country, but in another time. Her work as a top-notch epidemiologist and parenting her little girl helps alleviate the pain, but at night when her exhausted head hits the pillow, images of her beloved Cyprian haunt her sleep.
Cyprian Thascius returns from political exile a broken man. He’s lost his faith, the love of his life, and his purpose. He attempts to move on, to face the danger that is looming over Carthage, but when Cyprian’s true love suddenly reappears, his heart becomes as imperiled as the fledgling church he seeks to save.
Have the years that kept Lisbeth and Cyprian apart created too wide a chasm to bridge? In the midst of a new epidemic and rising oppression, will their love be the most costly fatality? Filled with gripping action and raw emotion, this spell-binding adventure of star-crossed lovers captivates with every turn of the page in this electric continuation of The Carthage Chronicles.
