Secrets Resurfaced by Dana Mentink

MY REVIEW:

Secrets Resurfaced wraps up Dana Mentink’s Roughwater Ranch Cowboys series with lots of action and a few surprises. With the requisite romance, personal  conflict, a lovable dog or two, and cowboys, this Love Inspired Suspense has everything required for a satisfying evening escape.

When Dory Winslow returns to the area on an investigation, it is inevitable that she will meet up with her ex-boyfriend Chad. Their relationship did not end well and Chad has unresolved resentment against her related to a past tragedy. Despite his distrust of Dory, Chad cannot stop himself from running to her rescue and making himself her protector every time danger rears its head – and that seems to happen quite frequently.

The story takes several unexpected twists and turns along the way as what seems to be obvious changes a time or two. It was fun attempting to discover the guilty parties along with Chad and Dory as well as observe the renewal of their relationship as the conflicts were resolved. I always enjoy Dana Mentink’s books and love the way she includes animals as an important plot element. She manages to tell the story without revealing too many pertinent details until just the right point.

Although Secrets Resurfaced is the final book of a series, it easily stands on its own merits. That being said, readers will probably want to also read the previous books in the series to learn the stories of Chad’s older brothers. It is definitely worthwhile.

Border Breach by Darlene L. Turner

MY REVIEW:

I will be totally honest and state that I’m not 100% certain if I have ever read a novel by Darlene L. Turner. I have been reading Love Inspired Suspense for years so I have lost track of what I have and have not read. Based on Border Breach I plan to remedy that and plan to read more by this talented author.

Action began quickly during the very first chapter and the suspense escalated throughout the book. The plot was riddled with hints but not only were the characters misled by many of them but I was also thoroughly surprised by the revelation near the end. I love it when I don’t have everything all figured out by the middle of the book.

The characters were real and easy to identify with. Kaylin’s past that caused her to doubt God and Hudson’s experiences had left him with nothing but his faith in God and distrust of women. It was fun to watch the sparks fly between them as they fought to stay alive while attempting to bring down a drug ring operating both in Canada and the U.S.

Border Breach is an excellent book that illustrates Kaylin’s journey to faith and forgiveness. I look forward to reading more from this author.

One Little Lie by Colleen Coble

MY REVIEW:

Colleen Coble’s books have been on my must read list for several years but I believe she has outdone herself with One Little Lie. This novel grabbed my attention from the very first page and held it until the very end. With a convoluted plot where almost every character was suspect at one time or another and every one of them had secrets, the story had me on the edge of my seat much of the time. I certainly did not want to put it down until I finished it.

As always, the author has created characters that are easy to love and to identify with, characters who struggle with trust and faith just like we all do. Each and every chapter builds layer upon layer with unexpected twists and turns and surprises around every corner. A gripping tale with the perfect touch of romance, One Little Lie is a must read. I am looking forward to the next book in this series, Two Reasons to Run. Take my advice and do not miss this one if you are a fan of Christian suspense.

Killer Harvest by Tanya Stowe

MY REVIEW:

Killer Harvest hits the ground running when heroine Sassa Nilsson witnesses the unexpected murder of her friend and boss. Border Patrol agent Jared De Luca has been working with Sassa’s boss to help bring down an environmentalist terrorist group and is determined to protect Sassa and her baby daughter at all costs while she works tirelessly to reproduce the crop virus developed in the university lab and prevent it from getting into the wrong hands.

As Sassa is relentlessly pursued by members of the terrorist organization, sparks also ignite between her and Jared who also develops a surprising bond with her daughter. Both of them have some trust issues, both with other people and especially with God but their circumstances demand that they learn to trust each other and depend on the Lord’s help in their desperate and dangerous situation.

A riveting narrative, Killer Harvest held my interest until its end with interesting, life-like characters and a well-developed plot. I enjoyed this novel and look forward to reading more by Tanya Stowe.

MORE FROM TANYA:

As a teenager, I spent my summers water-skiing on the King’s River in Central California. Even though we lived on the coast and the ocean, we traveled inland to the smooth river waters every other weekend for our sport. We camped on a sandy beach, skimmed over the water all day long and at night sat under a sky full of brilliant stars and listened to the sound of the water rippling past. Since we lived on the coast with a heavy marine layer, the amazing sky always fascinated me. Surrounded by massive cottonwood trees, with the smell of ripe fruit drifting toward us, my river experiences were different from home and more than memorable. On some nights we’d hear the splash and laughter as teenagers, somewhere across the river, came down to swim. I always wondered what it would be like to live in the nearby small, neat-as-a-pin town, to know the same people all of my life and to be able to drive down to the river with my friends on any given night. I envied those teenagers and always knew I’d someday write a story about central California. I didn’t know it would involve biological warfare and crazed killers…but that transition is another story all its own! I’ll stop here and hope you enjoy Killer Harvest!

Cold Case Connection by Dana Mentink

MY REVIEW:

Cold Case Connection is another page-turner from Dana Mentink who in my opinion is an expert writer. I especially enjoy her suspense novels. Once again she has written a tale that held my attention to the very end and I was reluctant to put it down to attend to mundane things like housework.

The steady plot dropped plenty of hints in just the right places yet I didn’t manage to solve the mystery on my own until it was revealed within the story. Plenty of action and suspense kept those pages turning. I loved the sparks between Sergio and Helen despite the initial conflict and distrust. Both characters were well-rounded with unresolved guilt feelings that drove them to find the murderer of Sergio’s sister and the possible connection to a death in the past.

I thoroughly enjoyed this riveting suspense with a strong hint of romance. It was fun to touch base with characters from earlier books in the series. I look forward to future releases by this author.

MORE FROM DANA:

Cold Case Connection was really fun to write because it’s Helen’s story. She’s an intelligent, sensitive woman who is the sister to the men living on the Roughwater Ranch. Liam is her biological brother, but she’s just as close to Chad and Mitch who might as well be blood relatives. In this novel, Helen has to relive the worst moment of her teenage life, the night when a mysterious murder occurred during a teen prank. Helen is going to have to face the past in order to preserve her future. Cowboys, a case gone cold, a coastal ranch and a whole lot of danger…I hope you will enjoy the ride!

Above the fold by Rachel Scott McDaniel

MY REVIEW:

I always hesitate a bit before requesting a review book from a new-to-me author. What if I don’t like it? I really don’t like leaving negative reviews and sometimes it’s just plain difficult to leave a tactfully positive one if I don’t care for the book. Yet I have added quite a few new favorite authors to my must read list so I usually like to take a chance. Rachel Scott McDaniel is one of those new-to-me authors and I am pleased to say I am writing a genuinely positive review for her new book Above the Fold. I liked it so well that I will definitely be on the lookout for her next novel.

Above the Fold is a romantic mystery set during what is known as the Roaring Twenties. My grandmother was a young woman during that era so it is always fun to read about the times she lived in during her younger years. The story was everything I love in a book. Not only was it romantic but it was witty and suspenseful and blended with a perfect touch of faith. I enjoyed the characters, especially Elissa and Cole who both came to life on the pages of this story. I was impressed by their integrity and their dedication to finding and reporting the truth and the way each of them was willing to lay down their own ambitions for the other.

Details about the newspaper business were interesting as were the descriptions of Pittsburgh during the twenties. I can’t wait to read more from this delightful author.

I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book provided by Celebrate Lit. A favorable review was not required. All views expressed are my own.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Confined behind a secretarial desk at her father’s struggling newspaper, Elissa Tillman longs for her father and the world to take her seriously—not just as a suffragette, but also as a full-fledged journalist.

Cole Parker regrets the day he’d abandoned Pittsburgh to chase a high-profile journalism job in New York, but now he’s returned to the steel city to amend his mistakes and win back the woman he once spurned.

The murder of a millionaire offers the perfect chance for Elissa to nab the headline and prove her skills. But there’s a catch. To get her story above the fold, she must compete for it. Her rival is none other than Cole Parker, the very man who shattered her heart.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Rachel Scott McDaniel is an award-winning author of historical romance. Winner of the ACFW Genesis Award and the RWA Touched By Love award, Rachel infuses faith and heart into each story. She currently enjoys life in Ohio with her husband and two kids. Rachel can be found online at www.RachelScottMcDaniel.com and on all social media platforms.

MORE FROM RACHEL:

What does the classic movie His Girl Friday, famous mystery writer Agatha Christie, and my husband’s grandfather all have in common? They were all used as inspiration for my debut novel Above the Fold.

His Girl Friday is one of my favorite stories. This movie captures the thrill of the newspaper world—that drive within the reporter’s heart to get the scoop, that hum of activity from the newsroom to the firing of the presses, and that inescapable pursuit to beat out the opposing paper. But what I loved most about this movie was the chemistry between the two main characters. They share a romantic history. In turn, there is major tension, but man oh man is there spark! So this triggered my creative mind. What would happen if I switched the roles and had the heroine be the one that gets jilted? What if I set this story in the 1920s when the profession of journalism was male-dominated? What if I add some more mystery? Cue Agatha Christie.

My husband and I love Christie’s Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple series. Did you know that she wrote over 74 books? That’s staggering to me. My mind reels at how intricate and varied all her plots are. My husband and I would try to guess who the murderer was at the beginning of a story and more often than not, we were wrong! On one particular night we were watching a PBS version of Miss Marple and an idea struck me. What if I changed my story to go this route? What if I made this person the villain instead of that one? The idea that came to me had nothing to do with the story we’d been watching, but one thing that’d been said flickered a light in me. I love it when that happens! And I also love it when I can incorporate pieces of my personal life into the book. This brings me to the biggest inspiration of the story—my husband’s grandpa.

Grandpa Jay Lewis had two loves in his life—his wife and the newspaper press. He’d started working for the local newspaper during his early teens and made his way up the ranks until he became the press foreman. Here’s a picture of Jay when he was in his early 20s. The hat shown was made of folded newsprint paper and worn to keep the ink from dripping on his head. But the expression in this picture says it all—the press was his happy place. He’d worked with the presses for over five decades, until he no longer had the strength. In 2004, he passed away, but his legacy lives on in the hearts of many. So in tribute to Jay and his great passion for the newspaper world, I included him in the cast of characters. I only hope I was able to capture his zeal.

So there you have it. Inspiration came to me in a myriad of ways, but they all worked together to bring you a story that I pray delights your heart.
