MY REVIEW:
I always enjoy one of DiAnn Mills’ romantic suspense novels and “Deadlock” was no exception. I can be fairly certain that the author has done her research and any law enforcement details have been checked out and are as authentic as possible.
In “Deadlock” the new partnership of FBI Special Agents Bethany Sanchez and Thatcher Graves is put to the test time and again as they seem to work around the clock to solve the case of the Scorpion murders. Harassed by both her brother and the killer and distressed over her estrangement from her family, Bethany is stressed and not sure she can depend on Thatcher. Each of them is determined to fight against their mutual attraction and focus on solving their case before it is too late.
Bethany and Thatcher are both strong characters who carry the story. Several possibilities for the murderer are hinted at during the course of the tale but final revelations are somewhat surprising. I admired Thatcher’s determination to change his life based on his recent decision to follow Christ even though circumstances might justify falling back to his old patterns. The plot moves swiftly from one action-filled scene to the next and the suspense builds to a dramatic conclusion.
A gritty story that focuses on faith, family, and reconciliation, “Deadlock” kept me involved until the very end.
I always enjoy historical romance novels, particularly when they have a Southern setting. It is even better if they have at least a touch of suspense. Dorothy Love’s “A Respectable Actress” meets all the requirements.
Philip Sinclair is hired to defend famous actress India Hartley when she is accused of a murder – one of which she is innocent. To protect her from the public until the trial, he takes her to his home on St. Simons Island. As one might expect, Philip and India discover a mutual attraction but it is not the primary focus of the novel. While the pair works to prove her innocence, India discovers clues to an earlier disappearance and death that took place at Indigo Point.
Philip and India are strong characters, especially India. Despite her fame, India has a caring and giving personality. I loved the twists and surprises throughout the plot. Just when I thought the story had reached its climax (and wondered why there were still so many pages left to read), even more surprising events took place. The author did a wonderful job of taking what seemed to be totally unrelated events and tied them all together for an exciting conclusion.
Dorothy Love’s books have never failed to hold my interest. I highly recommend “A Respectable Actress” as well as any of her other novels.

“Vendetta” is a well-crafted novel filled with suspense, drama, action, and just a hint of romance. I hope to witness the progression of that particular romance as the series continues.
Realistic, three dimensional characters Nikki Boyd and her best friend’s widower Tyler worked well together as a team and had me rooting for them through the entire book. I liked how supportive and protective Tyler was toward Nikki yet he didn’t try to diminish her effectiveness in her job as an investigator for the Tennessee Missing Persons Task Force. I also liked the depth of character development that gave me insight into what motivated Nikki and Tyler’s decisions.
The story moved along at a steady pace with ample twists and surprises along the way to hold my attention. The spiritual content was natural and did not overshadow the story line at all. I thoroughly enjoyed “Vendetta” and look forward to the next installment of the series soon.

“The Methuselah Project” is a suspenseful novel that definitely raises some “what if” questions in my mind. There has to be something to that old saying “Truth is often stranger than fiction”. I don’t think anyone came up with a process to make people live for centuries but I know enough to know that there are behind-the-scenes men who seem to be controlling everything worldwide these days. I would say that the possibility of an organized group could easily have been formed the way Rick Barry suggests in this book.
This is one kind of speculative novel that I can get into – one that combines plenty of true facts with enough speculation to make a very compelling story. The story is told in two different time frames and points of view that eventually merge for the conclusion. Roger was quite believable as a young man who had been held prisoner in Germany for seventy plus years. I liked how he didn’t give up but kept himself prepared just in case the opportunity to escape ever came. Katherine was also an excellent character. She believed in her uncle’s love for her and wanted to believe in his integrity but there was just something that didn’t add up about the organization he had groomed her to be a part of. I felt that she made the right choices when faced with the truth.
Although the story does not always move at a fast pace, there were several exciting scenes as well as some big surprises. I enjoyed “The Methuselah Project” and thought it had a unique story to tell.

Now that I have read both “A Cry From the Dust” and “The Bones Will Speak” I am certain that I will have a place on my bookshelves for any forthcoming novel by Carrie Stuart Parks. I have always enjoyed suspense novels but in the past few years have begun to shy away from those that have too much gore. Carrie’s books have just enough details to ramp up the suspense as well as give the crimes credibility but she does not include anything that makes me cringe or keeps me awake at night. I also like the fact that she draws from her own career and personal experiences for her plot and character development.
In “The Bones Will Speak” forensic artist Gwen Marcey is trying to pick up the pieces after a bout with cancer, an unwanted divorce, and financial pressures due to the loss of her job. A discontented teen daughter adds to her stress. When her dog brings home a human skull, Gwen’s life becomes even more complicated as more bodies are discovered and there is even a possibility that she and her daughter are being targeted by a serial killer.
This book had me turning the pages as fast as I could read. I didn’t want to put it down until I found out who the killer could be. Plenty of twists and surprises kept the story moving and the tension built throughout the book until its climatic last pages. I can’t wait to read about Gwen’s next adventure.
