MY REVIEW:

In 1941 World War 1 is still fresh on the minds of many Americans and understandably many of them are not in favor of going to war again as Hitler’s troops march across Europe. Rallies often sprang up as one side or another gave their opinion on what the U.S. should do. Teddy Schafer, a photojournalist hopes to redeem her tarnished image by capturing a few amazing shots during a speech by Charles Lindbergh at Madison Square Garden. Things go terribly wrong when Teddy attempts to foil a gunman and ends up holding the gun herself after the shooter made a quick getaway in the crowd.

The author takes her readers on an exciting journey back in history through the experiences of Teddy and Ric Bogart, the private investigator who cannot decide whether he believes in Teddy’s innocence. Plenty of action ensues and readers will root for a romance to develop between the unlikely pair as they race against time to identify the true murderer.

Murder at Madison Square Garden was a fun read that hit just the right notes for my enjoyment. Characters were both likeable and somewhat unique and the plot moved along at the perfect pace. I definitely plan on reading more by this author.

Dear readers:

I grew up in New Jersey and often went into New York City for school field trips and family visits. One of my favorite places to go was Madison Square Garden. I have lots of happy memories, so I wondered if I could possibly set a book there. I spent a lovely afternoon digging into the building’s past and learning about the important, historic events that took place there. When I discovered that aviator Charles Lindbergh spoke at the Garden about the controversial topic of U.S. isolationism prior to America’s entry into WWII, I knew I had the beginning of a story.

My protagonist came about during one of my shifts as a volunteer docent at the Wright Museum of WWII. While talking to one of our guests about our wartime print and broadcast journalism display, the conversation turned to the role that women played. Therese Bonney was a one of the photojournalists highlighted in the exhibit. As I studied her picture, I was struck by her determination in the set of her jaw and look in her eyes. My protagonist Theodora “Teddy” Schafer was born.

I enjoyed my trip down Memory Lane at the Garden during my research and had fun subjecting Teddy to uncomfortable situations as she tried to prove her innocence. But most of all, I hope her story honors the men and women who served in countless ways during this difficult time in history.

The third book in Cornthwaite’s Wilkester Mysteries, Written Off is a satisfying conclusion to the series. Katrina is counting down the days to her happily-ever-after with Todd when a series of hate crimes occur in the area. In itself, that would be disturbing enough but each of the incidents has an eerie connection to the students in her writing class.

Written Off moves at a slower and more gentle pace than the previous two novels of the series, possibly because no murder actually takes place in it. Much of the focus centers on preparations for the wedding, working on their new home that may turn out to be a money pit, and investigating the growing number of what appear to be racist based crimes. Katrina’s connection to the incidents as well as Todd’s involvement in the case added an extra level of tension to what should have been a happy time in her life.

I enjoyed reading details about Katrina’s classes, especially the writing assignments. The emphasis on faith and the importance of friendships was appreciated. Touches of humor kept the story from becoming too heavy and it was fun to observe interactions between Katrina and her friends as well as Todd’s family.

Written Off could be read as a stand alone but I would recommend reading the entire series in order to gain the most enjoyment from it.

What Kind of Lessons Could a Mystery Possibly Teach Me?

It’s been a couple decades since I taught a college English class, and writing the Wilkester Mysteries with Professor Katrina Peters as the main character brought back happy memories of teaching. Not enough to want to go back to it—homeschooling my own kids is much more rewarding—but enough that I had to stop myself from writing much longer lectures into the stories! These are my first contemporary novels, and it was nice to write a story without the hours and hours of historical research I usually have to do. But whatever time period stories are set in, people feel the same emotions and have to learn the same spiritual lessons.

Katrina loves literature and can’t help seeing her own life as a story. The only problem is that she keeps thinking she knows what the Author is doing, and she has definite ideas about what the plot should be. She is not unlike myself: over and over I’ve thought I knew what God was doing in my life. And if He was short on ideas, I had quite a few that He was free to use! But He has rarely been doing what I thought He was, and for some reason He never seems to use my ideas about what could happen in my story. Both Katrina and I need to learn the lesson that God’s wisdom is beyond ours, His storytelling is much deeper and richer than ours, and His plots are never predictable!

Never Miss by Melissa Koslin

MY REVIEW:

Melissa Koslin is another new to me author. As a fan of romantic suspense, I was eager to read Never Miss. I was not disappointed.

Although both the hero and heroine were almost too good to be true, this novel is fiction after all so I ignored their perfection and enjoyed every minute of their story. Between Lyndon’s photographic memory and Kadance’s skills as a sniper and navigational talent, not to mention that both were excellent problem solvers, the pair of them were a nearly superhero level team.

I guess I should have known to expect more plots involving viruses and biological warfare due to our all too real pandemic but this is the second novel this month. At this point I’d prefer my recreational reading to focus on another subject but nevertheless I did enjoy Never Miss. The pacing was excellent as was character development. I particularly liked Lyndon’s handsome nerd persona.

The requisite action, danger, suspense, and romance were present and the story contained a good balance of dialogue and action. The author also managed to keep me on my toes with several surprises and plot twists. I will definitely be on the lookout for more books by Melissa Koslin. Suspense lovers might want to check her out.

MY REVIEW:

I have absolutely loved having the chance to revisit Deep Haven through the new Deep Haven collection presented by Susan May Warren and each volume written by a new-to-me young author. So far each of them has stayed true to the standard set by Warren in her own previous Deep Haven series and it has been such fun meeting new characters as well as touching base with old favorites.

Crazy For You features Pete Dahlquist, fire chief and member of the town council, who just happens to be related to most of the Deep Haven residents – most notably the Dalquists and the Zimmermans. Unfortunately the two families are fierce competitors and each family wants what is best for the town but only if it is best for their own interests. Pete is stuck in the middle attempting to keep the peace but it has become evident that that’s a near impossibility.

Ronnie Morales has recently moved to Deep Haven to take the head paramedic position, hoping that the move will help her younger brother Tiago who could not seem to stay out of trouble in the city. Dedicated to her profession and her brother, Ronnie does not always come across well to others and may have difficulty lasting her probation period for that reason.

Neither Ronnie nor Pete are thrilled to have to work together but they both quickly realize that their first impressions of the other were not correct and they soon become friends. Their friendship begins to break down some of Ronnie’s walls of self-protection and Pete learns that it is okay to make decisions on what he believes is best rather than trying to please both sides of his family.

The story itself moved along at a steady pace with numerous conflicts and dangerous events along the way. A few of Pete’s relatives were a real piece of work and one in particular was a true menace. I particularly loved how the town came together at the end to support Pete, Ronnie, and Tiago. Crazy For You is a great book and hope everyone will get a chance to read it.

Dusk’s Darkest Shores by Carolyn Miller

MY REVIEW:

I first read and reviewed The Elusive Miss Ellison in March, 2017 and have read and reviewed most, if not all, of Carolyn Miller’s subsequent novels since then. To say that she has become one of my must-have authors is an understatement. I have also enjoyed watching as this author has honed her craft and finely tuned each book along the way. I have thoroughly enjoyed them all but Dusk’s Darkest Shores may just be her best novel thus far.

Not only is this book a lovely romance but it plumbs the depth of human emotions and brings hope for those who believe they have none. Mary and Adam were characterized so well that I found it easy to care about their lives and struggles. I also appreciated how each of them matured as they recognized how true character is revealed by how one reacts to unexpected circumstances and hardship and that true beauty is much deeper than a pretty face.

Dusk’s Darkest Shores was one book I did not want to put down until its end and that end came much too quickly for me. The story was filled with all the requisite elements to make me one happy reader. If you have not read a book by Carolyn Miller, this one would be the perfect place to start.

MY REVIEW:

What a blessing to be able to return to Three Sisters Island in Maine for another visit! Suzanne Woods Fisher’s latest series almost makes me want to pack up and move to Maine. Unfortunately I am not a fan of winter weather so that would be a deal breaker. Our winters here in southwest Tennessee are more than enough for me.

It was a delight to visit with old friends from the previous novels and to make a new friend or two in At Lighthouse Point. All three Grayson sisters are back with Blaine as the predominate character. After time away studying at a French culinary school, Blaine returns to Camp Kicking Moose with big dreams and plans to serve gourmet food to their guests. Her well-meaning family who know absolutely nothing about commercial kitchens have already remodeled the kitchen as a surprise. Poor Blaine struggles to keep her disappointment to herself to avoid hurting their feelings.

The family is also not so happy that Blaine brought an unexpected companion with her for the summer – one who is so completely accident prone that he spends the entire summer on the couch recuperating from one mishap after another. Surprisingly it is his wisdom that brings the family members together as he encourages each one to follow God’s plan for their lives. And through it all, he might just discover God’s plan for his own life.

There is so much going on in At Lighthouse Point that I would be hard pressed to touch on even a fraction of it. Surprises abound, hearts are healed, relationships are mended, and above all the members of the Grayson family and their friends discover that the Lord’s plan is even greater than their own dreams.

Here are 10 facts about lighthouses that you might not know:

THE FIRST KNOWN LIGHTHOUSE was Egypt’s Pharos of Alexandria, Egypt, built in the third century B.C. The lighthouse was made from a fire on a platform to warn sailors of the port’s entrance. This lighthouse was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
THE OLDEST EXISTING LIGHTHOUSE IN THE WORLD is considered to be La Coruna in Spain that dates from ca. 20 B.C. A Roman lighthouse is located on the Cliffs of Dover in the UK that was constructed in 40 A.D.
THE UNITED STATES IS HOME to more lighthouses than any other country.
THE FIRST LIGHTHOUSE IN AMERICA was at Boston on Little Brewster Island (1716). The first keeper was George Worthylake who, sadly, was drowned, along with his wife and daughter, when returning to the island in 1718.
THE TALLEST LIGHTHOUSE is on Cape Hatteras, NC. Built in 1872, it reached 196 feet tall.
THE FIRST WEST COAST LIGHTHOUSE was built on Alcatraz Island in 1854.
DAYMARKS are the painted colors and patterns (diamonds, spirals and stripes) on lighthouse towers to distinguish them from each other.
LIGHTHOUSE KEEPING was one of the first U.S. government jobs available to women, as far back as the 19th century. Most obtained their position when their husband died or became incapacitated.

As I wrote the third book in the ‘Three Sisters island’ series, I just had to give that little charred lighthouse its day in the sun. It had patiently played a role in the first two books, waiting for its turn on center stage. Not only did its setting provide a very unexpected “WHAT? How did that happen?” conclusion to the series, it even stole the headline! The undisputed title: At Lighthouse Point.
