Reclaiming Hope by Carolyn Miller

MY REVIEW:

The latest Hooper Island adventure is one of those romances between totally opposite personalities. Reclaiming Hope is a fun story featuring Kai and Callie who are definitely opposites. Callie is a person who loves to make lists and check the items off one by one. She tends to be a workaholic but that is mostly to fill the empty spaces of her lonely life. On the other hand Kai is an adventurer who is 100% comfortable in his own skin – at least it appears that is the case. A famous surfer who has thousands of Instagram followers, Kai is the last person Callie would expect to be attracted to someone like her.

I thoroughly enjoyed revisiting Hooper Island and getting to know Callie better. It was also great catching up with Sam and Max as well as other friends from previous books in the series. The steady plot, frequent witty dialogue, real life obstacles, a strong message of faith and forgiveness, and a sweet romance combine to made Reclaiming Hope a delight to read.

Callie Steele might be a bit… focused on work, but despite what her employers say, she enjoys her well-ordered, productive life.

When she’s sent to meet the owners of an estate requiring post-hurricane landscaping, Callie meets their son, Kai Brody, a super-chilled pro surfer, who is as opposite from her as they come. Though initially smitten, Callie knows a relationship with Kai is a bad idea—a very bad idea.

Kai, however, can’t help but be intrigued by someone who challenges him to make something of his life again. He’s determined to pursue her, if she’ll give him half a chance.

The more time they spend together, negotiating the challenges of work, illness, and family, the more their opposing outlooks clash and connect. What do these unlikely friends really want from life?  Is it best to focus on work or recreation?

As Kai and Callie answers from the Lord, they also must consider if such complete opposites have enough in common to make a relationship last.

Reclaiming Hope concludes the Hooper Island stories of the Independence Islands Series featuring five islands, six authors, and a boatload of happily-ever-afters.

The Independence Islands Series: beach reads aren’t just for summer anymore.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Carolyn Miller is an Australian author of inspirational romance, particularly that of the Regency era, and loves drawing readers into fictional worlds where flawed people can grow in faith, hope and love through stories that show the truth of God’s grace in our lives.

MORE FROM CAROLYN:

For Reclaiming Hope, my next book in the Independence Islands series, I was thrilled to finally turn the spotlight onto Callie Steele, whose sassy attitude and words of wisdom in earlier books have made a mark on the other employees at Greener Gardens – and has already endeared her to readers who have been begging to read Callie’s story.

Callie needed a special someone who could help this hyper-organized checklist-loving woman see that there is more to life than meeting a deadline. Enter Kai Brody, a super-chilled and laidback surfer whose enviable travels around the world broaden Callie’s horizons, and watch sparks fly. I consider Reclaiming Hope to be one of my most humorous books yet, as these two trade banter as opposites who attract – but can they last?

And yet Reclaiming Hope isn’t merely froth and sea-foam, bigger questions concerning family, identity and whether God’s plans can be considered good when people are forced to live with the consequences of poor choices. I really enjoy writing fiction like this, fiction that is grounded in truth, with realistic, flawed characters who are on God journeys to find faith, freedom, and hope.

I’m so glad people are really enjoying my new contemporary books, where I can bring my love of gardens (& my horticulturalist hubby’s expertise!) to a new audience. Check out my website www.carolynmillerauthor.com to see what’s growing in my garden here in my corner of Australia.

If you enjoy stories of hope, heart and humor, then you’ll be sure to enjoy this novel about a workaholic and the broken surfer as together they find renewed hope for their hearts.

Happy reading!

Carolyn

Now That I Know You by Olivia Newport

MY REVIEW:

Oh how I hate to see this series end! I have thoroughly spending time in the mountain town of Canyon Mines, Colorado with Jillian Parisi and her opera loving (and singing) father as well as their delightful friends and neighbors. I loved the homey small town atmosphere where everyone knew their neighbors and were all prepared to support their needs.

In this final installment of the series, Jillian has found a cousin from her late mother’s mostly unknown relatives. As excited as she is to have a cousin near her age, Jillian is afraid that Cate may want more from her than she is prepared to give. Nevertheless, in her true style, Jillian finds herself in the middle of Cate’s problems and as they research Cate’s project, they find family history no one knew and also some unexpected connections between them and others in their lives.

Now That I Know You was a joy to read and I especially enjoyed learning a few interesting yet tragic historical facts from Colorado history. I find the genealogical aspect of this series to be of special interest and would love to read more books of this type.

Characters are quite realistic and I would love to know most of them. The romantic element is perfect and occupies just the right amount of the story. Faith is an important factor that also blends into the plot unobtrusively.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book as well as the entire series. It could be read on its on but I suggest reading each book in order to get the most from the series.

Cate Butler is the distant cousin genealogist Jillian was so certain she wanted to find—and the only connection she has to her deceased mother’s Parisi family tree. So why does she wish Cate would stop pestering her? And why can’t Jillian find a paper trail proving Cate is who she says she is?

Cate wants something for her own career that Jillian can’t give, but she also holds the key to family history Jillian can’t bring herself to walk away from. Nolan, Jillian’s father, steps in when Cate’s chronic career chaos requires legal rescue. Drew, the man who holds Jillian’s heart, has a surprising past with Cate. The truths Jillian, Cate, and Drew find while untangling these knotted threads tie them back together in remarkable ways none of them ever would have imagined.

Now That I Know You is Book 5 in the Tree of Life series, exploring and celebrating unforgettable family stories in Canyon Mines, the mountain town that invites you back again and again.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Olivia Newport’s novels blend the truth of how our pasts carry us into where we find ourselves now. Curiosity about history seems to creep into everything she does. Her books include Amish, historical, and contemporary stories that span the centuries from before the Revolutionary War right up to the present moment.

MORE FROM OLIVIA:

I’ve wanted to write Now That I Know You for nearly 20 years—at least the historical story part of this split-time novel.

When my son was a freshman in high school, he joined the mock trial team, and my husband and I entered the league of parents who watched versions of the same competition over and over. he state bar association selects a case and provides every team with the same documents to study as the basis of preparing both prosecution and defense. Team members play roles of attorneys and witnesses.

That first year, the case was trying a particular individual in connection with his role in events that culminated in the 1914 “Ludlow Massacre,” which is featured in Now That I Know You. My son played a witness for the prosecution. My proudest moment was when one of the scoring judges—who are actual court judges—singled him out for his skill in recognizing and dodging the opposing counsel’s interrogation strategy. Somebody hold me in my chair, because you really are not supposed to jump and cheer at mock trial!

Since I heard the case several times, the history wormed its way into my heart and mind. The injustice and tragedy of the story weighed heavy, but so did the legacy of the events and their eventual impact on history that affects us even today. People often ask where book ideas come from. Sometimes they germinate inside me for a long time before the moment is ripe to put them on the page in the lives of characters who have grown around them. This is one of those stories.

To Treasure an Heiress by Roseanna M. White

MY REVIEW:

So, how does one go about writing a review for a fabulous book without spoilers? I’m not certain that I can but I’ll give it my best shot.

To Treasure an Heiress is Roseanna M. White’s second installment of her The Secrets of the Isles series. The story takes up pretty much where The Nature of a Lady left off as Beth Tremayne and her friends and relatives continue their search for the legendary pirate’s treasure that has been the subject of island legend for many generations. Familiar characters are abundant and new ones add even more interest to the tale.

This may be the most humorous novel that I’ve read by this author, especially the endearing hero Lord Sheridan who has a bad habit of speaking aloud what he is thinking. He and Beth are at odds for a good many chapters, mostly because she holds it against him that he is in possession of her own treasured trinket box. But how can she resist such a charming man who obviously seems to have fallen head over heels for her (and I mean that almost literally). Needless to say, readers should be most pleased at the resolution of their differences even as they discover another budding romance or two to root for.

As always, White has written a beautifully entertaining novel that is laced with adventure, mystery, romance, and a believable journey to faith that takes place in a gorgeous setting. What more could one ask? Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of To Treasure an Heiress as well as The Nature of a Lady. Either can be enjoyed on its own but read in the proper sequence they will be even better.

I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book provided by the author and Bethany House, a division of Baker Publishing Group. A favorable review was not required. All views expressed are my own.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

The Secrets of the Isles, 2
Releases January 4, 2022

1906

Beth Tremayne has always been drawn to adventure. During her childhood, she fed that desire by exploring every inch of the Isles of Scilly. As an adolescent, she dreamed of love in London’s ballrooms. Now, stumbling across an old map on her family’s property, she’s found more adventure than she ever dreamed in the hunt for pirate treasure. Unfortunately, Beth can’t escape the attentions of her family’s guest, Lord Sheridan.

Sheridan has spent years pursuing whatever archaeological interest caught his imagination. And when he discovers that Beth’s search connects with one of his favorite pirates of history, he can’t help getting involved. Plus, he finds her irresistible, even though she insists he stole a prized possession of hers.

As they work together following different clues and drawing closer to danger, they start to piece together a story of tragic love and piratical adventure. But the true surprise is the treasure they discover in one another.

Love on the Range by Mary Connealy

MY REVIEW:

I always enjoy any book by Mary Connealy because I know I am sure to find a good dose of her signature humor mixed in with a complex romance and usually plenty of action and suspense. Lately the author’s books have leaned somewhat away from her earlier comedic offerings and I have found quite a bit more mystery and suspense woven through her tales. I really like that. I do enjoy a story that makes me laugh but lately I find that over-the-top humor sometimes just wears me out.

Another final book of a series, Love on the Range features the last unmarried Hunt brother Wyatt and Molly Garner who has been left to care for him as he recovers from his injuries. Determined to never marry and suffer her mother’s fate, Molly fights her growing attraction to Wyatt. Readers will quickly recognize how this story will end.

Yet before that end is reached, there is ample action, danger, and mystery to distract the reader. I enjoyed seeing how the brothers, who were previously unknown to each other, developed strong and loyal relationships that made them a strong unit difficult to overcome. It was especially fun to see the unique traits that each of the men and women brought to the table that enabled them to do what needed done. It made me think of the one body described in 1 Corinthians 12.

Love on the Range can be enjoyed on its own but I do recommend reading the entire series in order to get the most from it. Another great series from Mary Connealy has reached the end. I can’t wait to see what she has in store for her readers next.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Falling for someone who doesn’t want to get married is soon to be the least of his concerns.

While his brothers and their new wives search for who shot him, Wyatt Hunt is temporarily bedridden and completely miserable. Somehow Molly Garner’s limited skills have made her the most qualified in their circle to care for Wyatt. But by the time he’s healed, she’s fed up with him and the whole ungrateful family. For even worse than his grumpiness were the few unguarded moments when he pulled at her heartstrings, and she has long been determined to never repeat her mother’s mistakes.

When alternate plans of finding her own independent life fall through, Molly volunteers to work for the Pinkertons and help investigate nearby ranch owner Oliver Hawkins. She signs on to be his housekeeper, hoping to find clues to prove his nefarious, and possibly murderous, past. Wyatt refuses to let her risk it alone and offers to act as Hawkins’s new foreman.

But when another Pinkerton agent gets shot, they realize Hawkins isn’t the only danger. The Hunt brothers will have to band together to face all the troubles of life and love that suddenly surround them.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Unintended Detour by D. L. Wood

MY REVIEW:

Sometimes the nicest people in a book turn out to be villains and there are plenty of very nice people in Unintended Detour. In fact they are all quite likeable and no one would ever suspect them. Or would they?

And sometimes God fulfills the desires of the heart in very unexpected ways. While Chloe tries to fill her waiting hours while on a planned relaxation visit to the grand opening of her husband’s family’s new resort hotel, she jumps in and makes herself useful. Their visit is marred by multiple destructive events as well as a mysterious death and unexplained accidents. As Chloe works to put together an historical exhibit for the grand opening, she begins to find a few clues to an unsolved mystery from the mansion’s past. With the lives of herself and others she loves in danger, Chloe presses on bravely.

Although Unintended Detour is not quite as suspenseful as earlier books by this author, I thoroughly enjoyed following Chloe and Jack through their multiple adventures. The plot was tightly woven with hints dropped along the way but never enough to give anything away too soon. I really love being surprised by the true culprits and this book was full of surprises. Just when I thought everything had been revealed, up popped another suspect!

Lovers of Mystery/Suspense will definitely want to pick up a copy of Unintended Detour. I for one cannot wait to read the next installment.

A hundred-year-old secret might be the cause of and the key to solving a murder.

First, she learns of months of unexplained mishaps.

And now murder.

It soon becomes clear someone wants the resort to fail and will stop at nothing to make that happen. The question is…why?

In an effort to help the family business, Chloe picks up where the hotel’s last historical curator left off. Soon Chloe is caught in a deadly race to expose the mansion’s secrets before more innocents become victims of the malevolent force behind it all.

MORE FROM D.L. WOOD:

I love stories. I’ve always loved them. Stories carry you away, make you think, take you on suspense-filled rides and introduce you to characters that you love so much you want to meet them in real life. I’m such a voracious reader that at the age of nine, my eye doctor told me if I didn’t start reading with more light, I’d need glasses way too early. Can you relate?

I guess that’s why I became a writer—to be part of the amazing adventure that is storytelling.

And let’s face it. Right now, most of us wouldn’t mind an amazing adventure.

In my Unintended Series of suspense novels, you’ll visit sizzling Caribbean beaches, Tennessee in golden autumn, and a snow-blanketed Hudson River Valley with a cup of hot cocoa in hand. You’ll go with characters that are believable—flawed, brave and hopeful—in the face of danger. Of course, there’s always romance in the mix and touches of faith, leaving you encouraged as well as entertained.

It’s what I’d want to read, so I wrote it for you.

I’m beyond thrilled that the third book in the series is releasing. Frankly, I wanted to see what happened to Chloe, Jack, and Riley as much as my readers did!

I hope you enjoy reading Unintended Detour as much as I enjoyed writing it—and that you have an amazing adventure along the way.

Hooper Safe Haven by Rachel Skatvold

MY REVIEW:

Hooper Island Safe Haven is the latest book in the Independence Islands series with a Hooper Island setting. Having read many of the books in the series, it has been fun to touch base with the familiar characters from previous installments as well as getting to know new characters from the islands.

Alicia Roberts, new veterinary assistant to Kendall Roberts has just arrived on Hooper Island, hoping that it will be a safe home where she can relax her guard just a bit. It is obvious that she carries a heavy burden of worry and secrets around with her but details are revealed a bit at a time as her story progresses.

Jace Young helps his father run the apartment complex where Alicia settles. He and Alicia quickly develop a strong friendship and he feels more comfortable with her than expected, especially after her positive and helpful reaction to his medical issues that require a service dog.

I thoroughly enjoyed Hooper Island Safe Haven with its steady plot, excellent characterizations, secrets, and a positive surprise or two along the way. A strong message of faith and salvation was also quite encouraging. I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy faith based contemporary fiction and would also recommend previous books from the series.

Harbors should be safe havens, but what if you’re harboring secrets?

When Alicia Roberts accepts a job with mobile veterinarian, Kendall Mulligan, she hopes the Independence Islands will give her a safe place to start over. And as much as she appreciates the Mulligan girls’ offer to stay with them while she gets settled, Alicia knows she needs her own place. ASAP.

Hooper Ear Cove Apartments on Hooper Island offers a beautiful ocean view as well as one of the landlord’s hunky son—all at an affordable price. Just what she needs to start a new life. Isn’t it?

When life knocked Jace Young in the head with a literal curveball that ruined his major league chances, he was forced to return to Hooper Island and a job as the maintenance guy at his father’s apartment complex. On the side, he leads the contemporary song service at church as his heart heals.

When Alicia moves to Hooper Island, Jace is drawn in by her sweet personality. However, something hides deep beneath the surface, and Alicia resists any discussion of God. What will it take to convince her to anchor her heart to God and to confide the secrets she harbors?

Hooper Safe Haven continues the Hooper Island stories of the Independence Islands Series featuring five islands, six authors, and a boatload of happily-ever-afters.

READ AN EXCERPT:

Alicia Roberts leaned against the railing, watching the seagulls hovering above the ferry as it prepared to dock at the Merriweather slip. They were always waiting for something—tiny fish in the surf or tiny scraps the passengers left behind. In a way, she knew how they felt. Until now, she’d been waiting, too—although it was for something entirely different. She closed her eyes, enjoying the feeling of the wind whipping through her long brown hair. In deciding to work on the Independence Islands, had she finally found what she was waiting for? A new purpose? There was no turning back now. After graduating and moving out of her college dorm she had nowhere else to go.

The sound of the apron dropping to allow the cars and people off the ferry drew Alicia out of her ponderings. She approached her blue compact car, packed to the gills with all the belongings she owned and slipped into the driver’s seat as quickly as possible to avoid holding up the other passengers parked behind her. Within a few minutes, she drove up Captains Walk, spying a large RV parked in one of the lots. Kendall Mulligan greeted her the moment she parked and stepped out.

“Welcome back!” her auburn-haired friend exclaimed, pulling her into a tight embrace. “I’m so glad you decided to take the job.”

Alicia pulled back and offered a shy smile. “Me too. How could I turn down such a great opportunity right out of vet school?”

Kendall took her hand, pulling her along. “Here, come inside. There are breakfast sandwiches, pastries, and coffee from Granny’s inside. If we hurry, we’ll have a few minutes to enjoy them before patients start arriving.”

Her stomach rumbled as she followed Kendall up the steps to the mobile clinic. “That sounds wonderful. I forgot to eat this morning.”

“Now you sound like Carly. I always have to remind her to eat breakfast. She calls me a nag, but she’s hypoglycemic, so if I don’t keep on her, she can’t function very well in the morning.”

Alicia chuckled. “No one usually has to remind me. I can’t function without a bowl of oatmeal or some kind of protein first thing in the morning. I think my routine is just off with this new job and all, but I’ll adjust soon enough.” She paused, remembering something. “Speaking of Carly, I heard about her engagement to that billionaire. When’s the big day?”

Kendall shook her head with a slight roll of her blue eyes. “Next month, believe it or not.”

“Well, that was quick!”

“Yeah, tell me about it.” Her redheaded friend shrugged with a sigh. “I suppose when money is no object, a wedding can be whipped up pretty quickly, though. I never thought my little sister would get married before me. She’s always been so opposed to that kind of thing, but I guess when you meet the right one, why wait? I’m happy for them.”

“Me too. So, is that why she’s gone today? Wedding planning stuff?”

“Yeah, it’s going to be pretty crazy around here for the next month. She’ll be in and out of here a lot, but after the wedding she’s going to launch her new mobile art business with Luc. That’s why I’m so glad you could come and work with us.”
