MY REVIEW:

As a long-time fan of author Susan Mary Warren, I was delighted to discover a new series developed by her and several new authors set in the all time favorite small town of Deep Haven where so many of the author’s books have taken place. It has been such fun meeting up with old favorite characters who show up throughout the pages of this series, usually to encourage the primary characters in one way or another. That has certainly been the case with Then Came You in which several familiar faces interacted with Boone and Vivian as their own story developed.

Vivacious Vivian is an actress who has returned to Deep Haven after yet another failure in her New York acting career. She hopes to prove herself by producing a local theater production but encounters one roadblock after another including more than one threatening incident.

“Hottie” Boone is a police officer who has been ordered to take some time off to chill and deal with his anger issues. Used to an active life, Boone is not looking forward to a boring summer by the lake with his assigned reading – at least not until he meets Vivian. Knowing that he will be leaving New Haven in a short time Boone attempts to resist her charm but there is just something about her that makes him feel alive.

Then Came You is a fun read, perfect for the beach or a backyard hammock. Light-hearted and humorous at times, the story includes plenty of action and romance as well as a touch of suspense. And as all Warren fans will know, there is a bit of a lesson in faith and life woven into the narrative as well. Both Vivian and Boone deal with insecurity and their journey to wholeness could be helpful to others who struggle with the same issues.

I thoroughly enjoyed Then Came You and look forward to future books in this series.

MY REVIEW:

i have enjoyed most, if not all of Carolyn Miller’s historical romances so as a reader who likes most genres I was delighted to learn that she has ventured into contemporary fiction as well. Regaining Mercy, a novel in Celebrate Lit’s Independence Island series, highlights a new developing romance on Elnora Island. Mindy is a young, single mother whose number one priority is to provide for her four-year-old son Jon who is unlike other children his age. Back on the island after a failed appearance on a reality TV show, Mindy struggles with a lack of confidence and a poor self image. Friends Tina and Dermott attempt to help Mindy in every possible way and also to encourage her but she often suspects their motives.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, especially some of its characters. Tina was a true friend, a gem of a person I’d love to have as my own friend. And Dermott – he’s the kind of guy a woman like Mindy needs in their life – someone to build them up and who stands by their side no matter what. Mindy’s son Jon was precious and I loved reading about some of the breakthroughs in his communication with Mindy.

Regaining Mercy also has an important lesson that we need to learn as Christians. How much damage do we do to hurting people who are doing the best they can when we judge them and say unkind things about them? How many have we discouraged from a relationship with Christ by our own actions? Mindy was fortunate to have friends who did not give up on her but showed her the love and acceptance she needed.

Regaining Mercy is an excellent book that I am glad I had the opportunity to read. I highly recommend it.

A Man With a Past by Mary Connealy

MY REVIEW:

I have known for a number of years that when I pick up a book by Mary Connealy I can expect a few hours of solid entertainment. Her tales usually involve cowboys along with a hearty dose of adventure, often a touch of mystery, a liberal sprinkle of humor, and of course romance. A Man With a Past lived up to my expectations and more.

Although the author’s recent novels have not contained the degree of comedy found in earlier books, her unique sense of humor still makes itself apparent. Falcon Hunt’s loss of memory as well as his interaction with Cheyenne offers ample opportunity for more than a chuckle or two. I personally am enjoying Connealy’s venture into a bit more serious and suspenseful stories of late and find myself not wanting to put the book down until I reach the end.

The second installment of the Brothers In Arms series, A Man With a Past does overlap the first book, Braced For Love but it is told from a different point of view. This is also helpful to readers who have not read book one or to refresh the memories of those who have.

A bit slow getting started, probably due to the recap, but it does not take very long for intense action and suspense to ensue. It was fun watching the development of the relationship between Falcon and Cheyenne and I also enjoyed a few guesses about potential romance between other characters in the future.

I always enthusiastically recommend any of Mary Connealy’s books and A Man With a Past is no exception. Don’t wait. Pick up a copy for yourself asap.

A Lady in Attendance by Rachel Fordham – Celebrate Lit

MY REVIEW:

A Lady in Attendance was a story that held me enthralled from nearly its beginning. Featuring a young woman recently released after five years in a reformatory, the tale follows her experiences on her new job as a dental assistant and with the new friends she gains during that time.

Hazel is a young woman from a privileged background whose thoughtless actions resulted in false accusations and sent her to a reformatory. Once released, her family wanted nothing to do with her so Hazel was forced to support herself with employment as a lady in attendance to Dr. Gilbert Watts, a local dentist.

Although the plot begins a bit slowly it picks up its pace as Hazel, Gilbert, his brother Eddie, and two other friends work together to clear Hazel’s name. Plenty of mystery and unexpected twists provided an intriguing tale and a romance or two added even more interest.

All in all, A Lady in Attendance was a very satisfying read and I look forward to more books by this talented author.

Ten behind the scenes extras from A Lady in Attendance:

This book takes place in Amherst and Buffalo New York, places I lived for four years. Buffalo has had some rough years but if you ever visit the area you will see gorgeous old buildings, beautiful parks and cemeteries and understand why it was once a booming and prosperous city (and why I love it still). Gilbert and Hazel both grew up in the area (though, they did not know each other until the story begins). Two of my children were born in Buffalo and though they aren’t being raised there, I tell them stories.
Hazel spent five years in a New York State reformatory. Reformatories were basically the first juvenile delinquent facilities (the ages of who could be sentenced there was different from today). Reformatories were a new idea. There were still a lot of people who believed in “bad blood” and that a criminal could never be anything but a criminal. There were some heroes who fought hard to convince the public, that people could change. Because of this book’s storyline, I could not go too deeply into this subject, but it is fascinating!
Gilbert Watts is this book’s leading man. I gave up on being able to use the name Gilbert on one of my own kids and instead gave it to a character. I adore the name Gilbert and everything about this character, hope you do too!
There is a joke at the end of the book about a graveyard (don’t worry, it’s not scary) and it’s a nod to my mom who used to use this joke on us every time we passed a cemetery. I really love sneaking in things into my stories that will make my kids, family and friends smile when they read it. I often think of my books as love letters from me to others and the best kind of love letters are personal.
My husband is a dentist and as a result, we tend to notice dentist in media. They are often portrayed as villains or comic relief. I decided it would be my goal to write a romantic dentist that would change the image in readers minds.
Gilbert tells Hazel that being a dentist is really being an artist. When my husband was first trying to decide on a career path, he shadowed a dentist. He didn’t really think it would be for him, but he was open to exploring options. He came home and told me that the cool thing about dentistry was that you were essentially making art that was functional, every day. Little sculptures that helped people eat and smile better. Gilbert from the book is very different from my husband, but it was fun sneaking in little pieces of him in there.
One of my favorite scenes from this book take place at a corn husking. There is a tradition that says, if a red ear of corn is found, the finder gets a kiss. Sigh, I love that scene!
Without always meaning to, my books end up having messages woven into them. I believe one of the messages in A Lady in Attendance is forgiveness. In this case, it’s forgiving of one’s self. I believe this message is one that we all need at some point in our lives (or many points!).
My books are coming out in a different order than they were written in. I actually wrote this book before Yours Truly, Thomas and after A Life Once Dreamed. This story has been waiting a long time to be in print! During that time, it has been reshaped in little ways. It gained a prologue and lost an epilogue, it was tamed down in places and intensified in others, but the heart of it has always been the same!
One last piece of A Lady in Attendance trivia—several of my books have had their titles changed. It’s part of the writing process. The books get a working title and later a title that the rest of the world knows it by. The Hope of Azure Springs was originally just Azure Springs. Yours Truly, Thomas was originally Dear, Azure Springs. A Life Once Dreamed was originally The Belle of Penance. A Lady in Attendance began as A Lady in Attendance and stayed A Lady in Attendance. Not only is this title fitting because dental assistants were knowns by this or as an attending lady, but also because Hazel wrestles with her worth. In a society that believes a mistake made once can leave a mark forever, it takes the right eyes and open heart to realize that there truly is a lady in attendance.

Dark Threat by Kimberly Rose Johnson

MY REVIEW:

I have learned that I can count on Kimberly Rose Johnson for a well researched suspense that will keep me on the edge of my chair from beginning to end. In Dark Threat, TV reporter Trinity Lockhart pursues a lead from an informant that quickly morphs into a full-blown case for the FBI with Trinity under protection by members of Protection, Inc.

The plot of Dark Threat moves along at a steady pace that often picks up the tempo during critical points. I found the details about Trinity’s life as a reporter as well as FBI procedure, and the world of art theft to be an added bonus. It was fun trying to figure out who was behind the crimes and loved the twists and surprises along the way. The author sure fooled me! I also appreciated witnessing Trinity’s journey from basic faith to a full faith in God.

I have enjoyed each book of this series and look forward to more from this author in the future.

Dark Threat features FBI agent Kyle Richards. We first met Kyle in book one of the Protection Inc. series where he joined the team while working undercover for the FBI. He has since become an honorary member of the team and has been in every book since.

When I set out to write this series I planned to only feature the team members, but Kyle is practically part of the team, so he needed his own story too. I thoroughly enjoyed getting into Kyle’s head for this book.

As with most books, this one took research. Through the years I’ve done all kinds of research to understand the occupations of my characters. For the characters occupations in Dark Threat I did some different kind of research than I’ve done in the past.

I really wanted to understand how FBI agents think and operate so I listened to an audio book written by a former agent. The man was rough around the edges but it really helped me understand the atmosphere in which agents work. Then I read a book written by a female, former CIA as well as FBI agent. It was fascinating to see the differences between the agencies from a former agent’s point of view.

Trinity, the female lead in Dark Threat is a crime beat reporter. I pretty much knew nothing about the life of a television reporter, so I watched You Tube videos filmed by actual reporters about a day in their lives as reporters. One young woman did a series of videos, which I found extremely helpful. Another had the camera following her on the job. From her I learned about what it’s like to go out on location and how meal times during her day on the job were never guaranteed. She’d grab a bite when she could and sometimes she wouldn’t even be able to finish it because she had to rush to a breaking story.

Finally, I needed to better understand the art world. I have a college friend who is an amazing artist. She has a gallery in Boise, Idaho. I contacted her and picked her brain about art and art galleries.

As for anything related to law enforcement I asked my uncle who is a retired police officer.

The thing I loved most about talking to people about their professions is that one question often snowballed into a deeper conversation about the topic. My friend and my uncle would tell me things I didn’t even know I needed to know.

I think Dark Threat required the most research of all the books I’ve written. I’m not a huge fan of doing research, but I truly enjoyed every minutes of it for this book.
