Rhapsody in Red by Donn Taylor

MY REVIEW:

I sincerely hope that I can do justice to my review of Rhapsody in Red due to the fact that I struggled to stay awake while reading it. I do not blame the book because when I could actually stay awake I found it to be mostly engaging.

Once again Professor Preston Barclay finds himself involved in yet another mystery and this time he is the primary suspect. As he and another professor strive to find the real killer and prove themselves innocent, the evidence points to several suspects and Press is threatened multiple times.

The constant musical soundtrack that plays in the professor’s mind is still present. I do wish I was more educated on the many songs mentioned because I think that would have rendered the book even more entertaining. I also enjoyed the frequent puns and humor interspersed throughout the story. A bit of action and danger kept things moving along but putting together all the clues proved to be daunting. Any of the suspects could have been guilty and the big reveal was a surprise to me.

If you enjoy a mystery that makes you think, Rhapsody in Red as well as Taylor’s previous novels may be for you.

“IT WAS A BAD DAY TO FIND A CORPSE ON CAMPUS.”

Preston Barclay is a reclusive history professor with musical hallucinations. The feisty Mara Thorn is a newly arrived professor with a strong desire to be left alone. But finding the body of a murdered colleague shakes them out of their quiet lives. Worse yet, police accuse them of her murder, forcing the ill-matched pair into an uneasy alliance for their defense. However, that proves more perilous than they’d thought. To succeed, they have to outwit the police, avoid discipline by the college’s incompetent administration, and escape threats and attacks by the unseen and ruthless forces behind the murder. It’s a one-in-a-hundred chance, and if they fail, they’ll end up unemployed, behind bars, or worse . . .

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Donn Taylor led an Infantry rifle platoon in the Korean War, served with Army aviation in Vietnam, and worked with air reconnaissance in Europe and Asia. Afterward, he earned a PhD in Renaissance literature and taught literature at two liberal arts colleges. His published works include six suspense novels and a book of poetry. He is a frequent speaker at writers’ conferences. He lives in the woods near Houston, TX, where he writes fiction, poetry, and essays on current topics.

MORE FROM DONN:

About Rhapsody in Red: From teaching eighteen years in small denominational colleges, I knew that part of the academic world well. So when I came to write the Preston Barclay Mystery Series, that’s where I turned. What would happen if someone dropped a murder into that placid environment?

That was the basic question. But that part of the college world also has internal conflicts and tensions that even the best-intentioned people can’t avoid. That leads most faculty into being discreet. But what would happen if one professor kept saying openly what the rest of the faculty were only thinking? That’s why the series protagonist, Professor Preston Barclay, is always in trouble.

In writing the series I wanted to mainly to give readers an interesting story about a murder and the complications leading to its solution. But I also wanted them to enjoy the story’s interplay of strong and often quirky personalities navigating the varied conflicts of the small-college world.

Whether I’ve achieved those objectives will be decided by each individual reader. But CBA Retailers and Resources Magazine wrote that  Rhapsody in Red is “peopled with academia’s most intriguing eccentrics and snobs,” and Christian Review of Books wrote that it’s “a delightful change from the clichés of most novels.”

Readers who enjoy Rhapsody in Red may want to look at its two sequels, Murder Mezzo Forte and Murder in Disguise.

Girls of Summer by C. E. Hilbert

MY REVIEW:

C.E. Hilbert is a new author to me but after reading Girls of Summer, I will certainly be checking out more of her books. She managed to hold my attention until the very end with her riveting romantic suspense centered around organized crime.

This highly emotional book began with a bang and the danger and action continued to escalate from that point with a surprise or two along the way. Strained family relationships and an FBI investigation added to the tension. Characters were well rounded and relatable. Vivid descriptions brought me right into the center of the story and all the talk of southern food made me just a bit hungry. More than one developing romance was a bonus.

I loved the way the author gradually worked in Charlie’s journey to Christ as she described all the factors that led her to see the truth. Girls of Summer is a wonderful story of redemption and forgiveness. This is definitely a must read if you love happy endings.

When Charlotte receives the news that her estranged father has passed away, she finds herself in small-town South Carolina, forced to partner with her half-sister in running the baseball team and family business. If she can make it through 365 long days of running her daddy’s business, she’ll inherit half his multi-million dollar fortune—money she desperately needs to rectify the sins of her mother.

But can a big city girl overcome small-town sass and the unwelcome guidance of too-handsome-for-his-own-good general counsel Mac Taylor, or will this uptown girl discover she is truly a southern girl of summer at heart?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

C.E. Hilbert lives in sleepy town outside Columbus, OH in a 120-year-old fixer-upper with her Golden Retriever, Georgie. She believes that life goes best with Jesus, cookies made with real butter, summers watching baseball and winters filled with hockey.

MORE FROM C. E. HILBERT:

Did you ever have a fascination with an organization or an event? Maybe you are a World War II buff like my friend Nick or you have a deep appreciation (or obsession) for all things Star Wars like my nephew Alex? Maybe you were entranced with a book series or a television series? For me, I had a deep curiosity about organized crime in high school and college. I know, odd choice of interest, but my fascination was so deep I spent a semester being advised and mentored by a sitting federal judge and the head of our local FBI office on a school project about the impact of the Cosa Nostra in Ohio.

I, like so many people who have read Mario Puzo’s “The Godfather” or seen the movie adaptation, was infatuated with the romance the family drama told. I hadn’t really considered the destruction or lack of care for human life that actually existed within the American Mafia until I studied the organization. Although my curiosity continued, no longer did I see Michael Corleone’s story as a well-crafted work of fiction, but rather an overly romanticized view of a world of corruption and depravity. What I learned from those two mentors was simple – cut off the head of one organization and two more will rise in its place. The Cosa Nostra’s influence on America has waned in recent years, but organized crime is unfortunately alive and well.

In Girls of Summer, we see a glimpse of the impact of organized crime in America through the lens of one family so enmeshed in its web we are unsure if they will be able to survive to find freedom. Through telling this story, I not only wanted to share how the love of God can redeem even the most lost soul, but also give a window into the destruction that follows in the wake of those who do not value human life. Instead of romanticizing organized crime as books and movies have done for decades, my goal with integrating the Russian mafia into the fabric of Girls of Summer was to shine a light on the lack of decency and morality.

Girls of Summer is a suspenseful romance filled with the hope of redemption and reconciliation, but the story also gives a peek into a world most of us would prefer to believe lives only in fiction. Thankfully, we have dedicated men and women who are quietly fighting for justice with the hope of one day saying, organized crime is truly a thing of make believe.

Missing in the Desert by Dana Mentink

MY REVIEW:

From the very first chapter, Missing in the Desert grabbed my attention and wouldn’t let go until I reached the final page. Of course that it exactly what I’ve come to expect when I pick up a new book by Dana Mentink. Vivid scenery, a compelling mystery, loads of action, true-to-life characters, a believable romance, a subtle dose of faith, and often a unique dog work together to place this author’s books on my must read list.

A missing and presumed dead sister plus a strange text and postcard bring Mara back to Death Valley where her family once lived. It becomes obvious that someone wants her dead and she suspects it is connected with her sister’s disappearance. Her brother’s best friend Levi soon becomes her protector and she begins to remember why she was attracted to him during their high school days.

Danger and secrets abound in this exciting tale but the antics of Levi’s dog Banjo offer a bit of comic relief. Missing in the Desert is another great novel from Mentink and is not to be missed.

MORE FROM DANA:

Hello, readers! Boy am I excited! Since the virus-that-not-shall-be-named is being brought under control, I am cautiously venturing out again and our first vacation spot will be a return to Death Valley. Papa Bear and I love the amazing diversity of Death Valley, from the salt flats, to the sand dunes, mountains, and everything in between. Writing this book allowed me to relive the incredible topography, as well as let my mind run loose imagining a cold case that warms up to fiery levels in this ferocious climate. Part of this story revolves around “Camp Town Days” which was inspired by the Encampment Days, an event held in November by a volunteer group called the Death Valley 49ers that aims to capture the pioneer spirit with their wagon rides, parade, poetry readings, a vendor show, and historical talks. I hope you can feel the desert wind in your face and hear the distant howl of the coyote as you dive into the second book in the Death Valley Justice series.

The Chase by Lisa Harris

MY REVIEW:

Book 2 in The U.S. Marshalls series, The Chase takes up a few months after the previous book ends. Madison James is ready to get back to work after her recovery from a serious injury.  Her boss would like for her to ease her way back into action but when a bank robbery takes place on her first day back on the job, Madison convinces her partner Jonas to allow her to work the case with him.

As Madison and Jonas investigate the latest of a series of crimes, it soon becomes apparent that the perpetrators seem to be playing a dangerous game. Each clue brings more questions and the team finds themselves working against time as they attempt to stop the suspects before someone else gets hurt or dies.

The Chase is an action filled tale with danger around every corner.  The suspense laced with a developing romance keeps the characters on their toes as they learn they will have to depend on each other and the Lord to survive. Although Lucas makes his feelings for Madison quite clear, Madison is fearful of the pain that caring for another man could bring her.

As is often the case with series, the reader is left with a story that is not entirely resolved so they should be prepared to wait for the next book in the series to learn what happens to Lucas and Madison. I am looking forward to it myself.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Failure isn’t an option

US Marshal Madison James may not be sure who shot her three months ago, but she does know one thing–it’s time to get back out into the field. When her partner, Jonas Quinn, receives a message that a federal warrant just came in on a man connected to a string of bank robberies, Madison jumps at the chance to get back to work. What she and Jonas find is a bank robbery gone wrong–and things are about to get complicated.

For these bank robbers, it’s never been about the money. It’s about taking risks and adrenaline rushes, and getting caught is not part of the game. When the suspects escape, Madison and Jonas must hunt them down and bring them to justice before someone else–someone close to them–gets hurt . . . or worse.

Then Came You by Rachel D. Russell

Welcome to the Blog + Review Tour for Then Came You by Rachel D. Russell presented by Susan May Warren, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

MY REVIEW:

As a long-time fan of  author Susan Mary Warren, I was delighted to discover a new series developed by her and several new authors set in the all time favorite small town of Deep Haven where so many of the author’s books have taken place. It has been such fun meeting up with old favorite characters who show up throughout the pages of this series, usually to encourage the primary characters in one way or another. That has certainly been the case with Then Came You in which several familiar faces interacted with Boone and Vivian as their own story developed.

Vivacious Vivian is an actress who has returned to Deep Haven after yet another failure in her New York acting career. She hopes to prove herself by producing a local theater production but encounters one roadblock after another including more than one threatening incident.

“Hottie” Boone is a police officer who has been ordered to take some time off to chill and deal with his anger issues. Used to an active life, Boone is not looking forward to a boring summer by the lake with his assigned reading – at least not until he meets Vivian. Knowing that he will be leaving New Haven in a short time Boone attempts to resist her charm but there is just something about her that makes him feel alive.

Then Came You is a fun read, perfect for the beach or a backyard hammock. Light-hearted and humorous at times, the story includes plenty of action and romance as well as a touch of suspense. And as all Warren fans will know, there is a bit of a lesson in faith and life woven into the narrative as well. Both Vivian and Boone deal with insecurity and their journey to wholeness could be helpful to others who struggle with the same issues.

I thoroughly enjoyed Then Came You and look forward to future books in this series.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Title: Then Came You

Series: Deep Haven Collection #4

Author: Rachel D. Russell presented by Susan May Warren

Publisher: Sunrise Publishing

Release Date: July 6, 2021

Genre: Christian Contemporary Romance

He doesn’t need any trouble. She can’t seem to escape it.

Detective Daniel “Boone” Buckam is more than burned out. After fourteen stellar years on the job, one bad judgment call—and, fine, a whole lot of cynicism—has forced him into a mandatory vacation in Deep Haven. If he can get his head on straight, there’s a job as Police Chief waiting for him back in his Minneapolis suburb. And then, he meets Vivien.

Actress Vivien Calhoun isn’t really a drama queen. Sure, she gets swept up in the emotions of life—but please, she’s an actress. Or, um, was until a stalker made her flee the bright lights of Broadway. Now, she’s passionate about directing her local theater production. But when she accidentally ropes an uptight police detective on vacation into her cast, she can’t help but wonder if he might be the leading man she’s always longed for.

Boone can’t help but like Vivien. He might even have a type—vivacious and bubbly, with a penchant for attracting danger. He can smell trouble even if she can’t, and is pretty sure her stalker has hunted her all the way to Deep Haven. He’ll have to stay by her side—even if it means being in her silly play—to keep her safe. But Vivien is more than he expected as she helps him discover a part of him he’s locked away…the part that said he could never love again.

It’s summertime in Deep Haven, and the fun is heating up in this laugh-out-loud, charming story.

Regaining Mercy by Carolyn Miller

MY REVIEW:

i have enjoyed most, if not all of Carolyn Miller’s historical romances so as a reader who likes most genres I was delighted to learn that she has ventured into contemporary fiction as well. Regaining Mercy, a novel in Celebrate Lit’s Independence Island series, highlights a new developing romance on Elnora Island. Mindy is a young, single mother whose number one priority is to provide for her four-year-old son Jon who is unlike other children his age. Back on the island after a failed appearance on a reality TV show, Mindy struggles with a lack of confidence and a poor self image. Friends Tina and Dermott attempt to help Mindy in every possible way and also to encourage her but she often suspects their motives.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, especially some of its characters. Tina was a true friend,   a gem of a person I’d love to have as my own friend.  And Dermott – he’s the kind of guy a woman like Mindy needs in their life – someone to build them up and who stands by their side no matter what. Mindy’s son Jon was precious and I loved reading about some of the breakthroughs in his communication with Mindy.

Regaining Mercy also has an important lesson that we need to learn as Christians. How much damage do we do to hurting people who are doing the best they can when we judge them and say unkind things about them? How many have we discouraged from a relationship with Christ by our own actions? Mindy was fortunate to have friends who did not give up on her but showed her the love and acceptance she needed.

Regaining Mercy is an excellent book that I am glad I had the opportunity to read. I highly recommend it.

A mom ready to do anything for her son. A man determined to win the woman he loves.

Going on Love at First Glance had seemed like such a good idea. She didn’t care about finding Mr. Right. No, Mindy Murray chose the reality TV show for more mercenary reasons.  A mom’s gotta do what a mom’s gotta do when it comes to feeding her son.

When Mindy returns to Elnora, the girl from the “wrong side of the island” just wants a chance to rebuild her reputation. Too bad the folks at church don’t practice what the preacher preaches.

Enter Dermott Reilly. The interim boss at Greener Gardens has always had a soft spot for Mindy and her son, but with his new responsibilities, an important garden competition, and a few other concerns, he finds it difficult to prove himself to her.

A tropical storm and a missing child prove that sometimes grace appears in the most unusual ways.

Regaining Mercy concludes the Elnora Island romances of the Independence Islands Series, featuring five islands, six authors, and a boatload of happily ever-afters.

The Independence Islands Series: beach reads aren’t just for summer anymore.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Carolyn Miller is an Australian author of inspirational romance, particularly that of the Regency era, and loves drawing readers into fictional worlds where flawed people can grow in faith, hope and love through stories that show the truth of God’s grace in our lives.

MORE FROM CAROLYN:

Have you ever wondered what might happen if a failed TV reality star was to return home to her narrow minded community? What if she’s been tarred and feathered with disgrace?

In our world of insta-fame, selfies and fakebook, I find it fascinating that so many people are entranced by so-called reality TV, with its editing and narratives and shiny-eyed hopefuls chasing money, love and dreams. But what if it doesn’t work out? What happens next? How do you resume ‘normal life’ when you’ve been living in a very artificial world?

I enjoy writing fiction that is grounded in reality, with realistic, flawed characters who are on a God journey to find faith and freedom. My contemporary and historical novels often see characters struggle with the choices they’ve made (don’t we all?), which is exactly what single mom Mindy is dealing with.

Combine Mindy’s challenges with those faced by gardening expert, Dermott, a man whose stone wall building skills are better than his way with women, or his inability to hide his attraction to his former co-worker’s younger sister.

Regaining Mercy encourages us to see ourselves as God does, to not let the labels of the past to shape our future. Along the way, readers will enjoy the honest portrayals of family, friendship and faith.

I’m so glad people are really enjoying my new contemporary books, where I can bring my love of gardens (& my horticulturalist hubby’s expertise!) to a new audience. Want to see what’s growing in my garden? Check out my website www.carolynmillerauthor.com – and you might even see some of my husband’s famous stone walls!

If you enjoy stories of hope, heart and humor, then you’ll be sure to enjoy this novel about a prodigal and the patient gardener who helps her find God’s mercy – and renewed hope for her heart.

Happy reading!

Carolyn
