MY REVIEW:
The danger and action keep on coming for Cassidy Livingston who is supposed to be keeping a low profile in Lantern Beach but that girl just can’t seem to avoid getting involved in solving crimes. This time she and neighbor Ty, the handsome ex-Navy Seal, attempt to discover what happened to the man their friend Skye is accused of murdering. The story takes up soon after the end of the first novel in this series. “Flood Watch” can easily be read alone but details provided in the first series book “Hidden Currents” would help readers to understand more of the background on why Cassidy is in Lantern Beach and a little of the history between her and Ty.
As expected, I loved “Flood Watch” and pretty much read it through in one sitting. Now I must wait for the next installment and I find myself a bit impatient to find out what happens next. I love Christy Barritt’s novels because they have just the right combination of mystery, suspense, action, and romance with the perfect amount of her trademark humor to keep things balanced.
If you have not read anything by Christy Barritt, please do yourself a favor and pick up one or more of her novels asap. Her Lantern Beach series would be an excellent place to start but I daresay you will probably be hooked just like me.

MY REVIEW:
I have been bingeing on Christy Barritt novels lately and now I need to get myself into high gear to write reviews for them all. “Hidden Currents” is the first book in Barritt’s latest series – Lantern Beach Mysteries. As expected, I found myself engrossed in an exciting story filled with danger, mystery, a touch of romance, and plenty of the author’s trademark humor. I just wish I had her imagination!
Who wouldn’t love a story about a police officer living under an assumed name on a somewhat remote island clear across the country from her west coast home – a young woman who is supposed to keep a low profile but cannot resist sticking her nose into the investigation when it is obvious that Sheriff Bozo is unable to solve the murder case. Then there is the attractive ex-Navy Seal next door. They may have got off on the wrong foot but there just may be a few sparks igniting between them.
I loved “Hidden Currents” with all its interesting and sometimes unique characters, an ice cream truck that seems to have a personality of its own, and a plot that managed to keep me engaged throughout. I really like this series and can’t wait to find out what happens to Cassidy/Cady next.

MY REVIEW:
No sooner than professor Preston Barclay arrives on campus to teach a couple of summer classes, rumors have spread that he intends to investigate the death of his friend and fellow professor. Despite the police evidence that points to suicide, Press is drawn into an ever-growing web of situations where nothing is as it seems. Was his friend’s death actually murder and was it just one part of a farther reaching crime problem?
As expected, I thoroughly enjoyed this latest Preston Barclay Mystery, “Murder in Disguise”. The author deftly manages to combine drama, mystery, humor, and a touch of romance while also educating his readers on the Christian history and other facts taught by the professor. Characterizations are excellent as Taylor manages to make each one seem naturally realistic. A few surprises along the way kept things interesting as did the growing romance between Press and Mara.
I also liked the way the author managed to tie current campus politics and practices into the story. It helped confirm suspicions of why many of our young people have developed their current mindsets. If only more of our educators were like Press and Mara and Professor Collier.
“Murder in Disguise” is a terrific book and so is the entire series. This series would be one that many men would enjoy as it is told from Preston’s point of view and the romantic content is fairly subtle.

MY REVIEW:
I always enjoy a book by Christy Barritt. Not only does she create a good mystery that takes her readers down enough rabbit trails to keep them guessing but she does it with plenty of humor. Loved this first book in the new series about Joey Darling, a down-on-her-luck actress who is constantly mistaken for her famous role as detective Raven Remington. Naturally Joey finds herself up to her neck in the middle of an investigation and she manages to fumble her way to a few answers.
Loved this book and definitely plan to read the entire series. Joey Darling is an inspired character and it also doesn’t hurt that there are two men who play significant roles in this story. Can’t wait to see where this series takes them all.

MY REVIEW:
Linda Shenton Matchett is a new-to-me author so I was uncertain about what I might expect when I began reading “Under Fire”. I had no need to worry because I was quickly drawn into the story and found it one that was difficult to stop reading.
Well written with plenty of historical details and a great deal of mystery and suspense, the story is centered around journalist Ruth Brown and her quest to learn the truth about what happened to her sister who was believed to be dead despite the lack of a body. Ruth was a strong and determined character who could at times be a bit reckless in her drive to solve the mystery behind her sister’s disappearance. Convinced Jane was still alive, Ruth refused to give up, even when her own life was in danger. Her anger at God had contributed to a disturbing lack of faith that left Ruth vulnerable to the evil around her.
I enjoyed “Under Fire” and will certainly keep my eyes open for more books by this author.

Writers are often asked where they get ideas for their stories. Many authors start with a “what if” scenario (e.g. what if the fate of a world lies in the hands of a young man who must return a ring of great power to its place of origin: The Lord of the Rings). Other authors find inspiration in news articles (Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express). I begin my stories by creating the main character.
As a former Human Resources professional, I am fascinated by the history of women’s employment and enjoy reading about those who trail blazed in industries and positions formerly dominated by men. When I was trying to decide what my protagonist should do for a living, I knew she needed a job that allowed her freedom of movement, but nothing seemed to fit until I saw a museum exhibit about women war correspondents. Of the 1,600 journalists who received government accreditation, only 127 were female.
In order to get a sense of what these women experienced (derision, hostility, sexual harassment, and more) I read their memoirs, autobiographies, diaries, and articles. As an accredited correspondent they were supposed to received meals, transport to the front, and transmission of their articles. Many military officers refused to take the women into combat zones, so they had to get there any way they could, such as Martha Gellhorn who stowed away on a hospital ship and hid in the head to reach Normandy and cover D-day. It is my hope that Under Fire honors these brave and tenacious women in some small way.

MY REVIEW:
As a lifelong Southern girl who enjoys romantic suspense, I am loving Mary Ellis’ Secrets of the South Mysteries. Even better is the fact that “What Happened on Beale Street” mostly takes place in Memphis, the city with which I am most familiar. I have visited many of the places in this book so it was an especially fun read for me.
I can say that Mary Ellis can definitely construct a mystery that is difficult for me to solve ahead of time. She can really drop some red herrings and take her readers through some convoluted twists and turns along the way. The story has just the right blend of suspense, romance, and humor with a subtle touch of faith. There were a few laugh-out-loud moments that helped to ease the tension at just the right times. I loved meeting new characters as well as catching up with those from earlier books in the series.
If you are a fan of Southern mysteries, or just a mystery fan, I can almost guarantee you will love “What Happened on Beale Street”. Be sure to pick up a copy soon.
