MY REVIEW:
It seems like every time I decide I’m done with Amish fiction, I have the opportunity to read a book by one of the better Amish authors such as Laura V. Hilton and I have to rethink my decision. Yes there are plenty of Amish books out there that strike me as carbon copies with reworked characters and/or plots but I have also found a few authors whose novels are well worth my time. At this point, I won’t turn down a book by Laura V. Hilton.
Although her books are about the Amish, her characters are so full of life and they struggle with the same personal problems that the people I know experience. They may live a different lifestyle than I but I can easily identify with their doubts, their joy, and their pain. Not to mention that we all serve the same God. Another thing that keeps me reading Hilton’s books is that her romances have a certain “sizzle” yet retain their purity.
“The Christmas Admirer” features Benaiah Troyer and Susanna King who had planned to marry until tragedy struck his family. Because of added responsibilities, Benaiah decided that for her own good, it was best to break up with Susannah. Yes, he was one of those men who made decisions for another without getting their input. Then there was Susanna’s father who seemed to be good at doing the same thing to her. Everyone making decisions about her life without asking was enough to upset any woman.
I enjoyed this book quite a bit although there were a few times I did want to give Benaiah and Susannah’s dad a good shake or two to make them realize what they were doing to her. It was fun to read about Amish glassblowers but I would have loved to know a few more particulars about their craft. Nevertheless it was a great story and everything worked out to my satisfaction before it ended.
I would recommend “The Christmas Admirer” as well as other books by this author even if you don’t think you would enjoy Amish fiction.

Glass Blowing and The Christmas Admirer
Right before my youngest son joined the Coast Guard we went on a short mini-vacation to Springfield, Missouri, actually going farther north almost to Kansas City to see another Amish community near there in Osceola. There is a cheese factory there and my son wanted to try some of their cheeses – such as a ghost pepper cheese. Too spicy for me.
But upon the return to Springfield, Steve read about a glass blowers shop in the downtown area. We found the address and went to visit it. It is owned by an older gentleman and his son. They had a display area set up where people could see their wares and buy them and then a work area where the son mostly worked, and talked about how the fire needed to be so hot, and showed us how he worked and made things. As we watched, he made a lovely flower, a lily, in different colors of glass, green, white, pinks.
It was fascinating.
And I got to thinking what if…
So I did some more research. Asked questions. Probably drove them nuts. But when Whitaker House indicated they’d be interested in a Christmas novel, I proposed one about a glass blower.
The story is set in Jamesport, Missouri, and while completely stand alone, it does have some continuing characters from other books I’ve written set in Jamesport. If you are interested, the books set there are:

I haven’t read any books about an Amish glass blower, but that’s not to say they aren’t out there. I haven’t read all the Amish books available. Jamesport is an area that is more tourist-oriented than the books set in Seymour / Webster County Missouri. They give buggy tours, have bed and breakfasts, open their homes for visitors to eat supper with them, and have businesses.
All Amish districts are different and the rules vary depending on the bishop and preachers. Some are more liberal and some more conservative. Some keep themselves distant and don’t welcome attention from non-Amish and some embrace it. While Jamesport is not as touristy as some districts in Lancaster Pennsylvania or in Ohio, it is much more so than others.
Susanna’s Cranberry Salad
Ingredients
- 3 cups fresh or frozen cranberries (thawed), chopped
- 1 can (20 ounces) unsweetened crushed pineapple, drained
- 2 cups miniature marshmallows
- 1 medium apple, chopped
- 2/3 cup sugar
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 2 cups heavy whipping cream
- 1/4 cup chopped walnuts
Directions
- In a large bowl, mix the first six ingredients until blended. Refrigerate, covered, overnight.
- In a large bowl, beat cream until stiff peaks form. Just before serving, fold cream and walnuts into cranberry mixture.Makes 16 servings.
Susanna’s Cranberry Sauce
For on top of turkey sandwiches as Becca requested
Ingredients
- 4 cups fresh or frozen cranberries (thawed), chopped
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup water or orange juice
Directions
In colander, rinse cranberries. In sauce pan, add water or orange juice and sugar, boil until sugar is dissolved. Add cranberries and return to a boil. Lower to simmer and cook about 10 minutes or until most of the cranberries had burst. Let cool.
Susanna’s “Love Portion” Gingerbread
Ingredients
- 6 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 T baking powder
- 1 T ground ginger
- 1 t ground nutmeg
- 1 t ground cloves
- 1 t ground cinnamon
- 1 cup shortening, melted slightly
- 1 cup molasses
- 1 cup brown sugar
- ½ c water
- 1 egg
- 1 t vanilla
Directions
Shift together flour, baking powder, ginger, nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon. Set aside.
In mixing bowl, mix shortening, molasses, brown sugar, water, egg and vanilla until smooth. Gradually stir in the dry ingredients until they are absorbed. Divide dough into three pieces, pat down until about 1 ½ inch thickness, wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for three hours.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. On lightly floured surface, roll the dough out to ¼ inch thickness. Cut in desired shapes. Place cookies about 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake for 10 – 12 minutes in preheated oven. Cool on wire racks. When cool, decorate as desired.

MY REVIEW:
“Across the Blue” captured my imagination from the very first page. I loved reading about early aviation in England and the rest of Europe during the Edwardian era and the fierce competition to be the first across the English Channel. It was also fun reading about Isabella Grayson and her desire to be a reporter for her father’s newspaper despite it not being considered something any proper woman should do. She was expected to find a suitable husband and marry as soon as possible but Isabella had other ideas about her future.
Of course there is always a man in the mix and James Drake was a fine one. Only thing was, he was not exactly considered suitable for someone like Isabella and their strong attraction could only spell trouble for them both. That is not the end of the story though and some major plot twists keep it all quite interesting.
This well researched story has plenty of drama, danger, mystery, and of course romance for Turansky’s readers. I thought it was wonderful and recommend it to anyone who loves a good historical romance.

MY REVIEW:
What a delight to return for a visit to Thunder Creek and touch base with old friends and meet some new ones too! The author’s wonderful descriptions of the area almost makes me want to pack a bag to visit this fictional town. But another visit there through the pages of “You’re Gonna Love Me” will have to do for me.
I also loved every page of Sam and Nick’s story – one about forgiveness, second chances and facing your fears. I can absolutely relate to Sam’s cautionary nature for I am much the same way. At this point of my life, I’m not certain I can overcome my own fears but Sam’s experiences encourage me to try.
Another beautiful novel by Robin Lee Hatcher, “You’re Gonna Love Me” is one you will absolutely not want to miss!

MY REVIEW:
Once again Shelley Shepard Gray has written a book about the Amish that held my attention until the very end. The story gets started quickly with an accident (or was it?) that injures Susanna Schwartz and her rescuer just happens to be Neil Vance whose family had owned the farm that now belonged to Susanna’s family. Not only does the Vance family resent the new owners of their former home but it seems that the entire community blames the Schwartz family for the Vance family loss. As more accidents and vandalism take place, it becomes obvious that someone wants the Schwartz family to leave. The question is “Who would risk hurting someone because of an unfounded grudge?”
Although Neil seemed pretty unlikable at the beginning, it soon became evident that it was not his true nature. It didn’t take long for the sweet and forgiving Susanna to win him over as a friend. I enjoyed watching their relationship grow into something special and wondered right along with them what exactly was going on in their community.
This book has it all – a sweet romance and a dangerous mystery. Not only that but the reader will find a bonus romance in the works too. “The Gift” is a wonderful story laced with forgiveness and is perfect for the Christmas season. Once again I am pleased to recommend a book by Shelley Shepard Gray.

MY REVIEW:
“The Bachelor Missions” is a very imaginative speculative spy novel that combines present-day with retro and futuristic elements. Hero Kristian Clark loves his 50s style clothing and attempts to dress and act the part of a private eye from that era. Somehow he has yet to accomplish smoking cigars. This young man definitely has some other issues. He still blames himself and God for the death of a close friend. Although he believes himself in love with a particular young woman, he seems to also be drawn to every other woman he encounters.
There is a lot going on in this book, actually a bit too much for my aged mind to keep up with. It is probably the most confusing book I have ever read. Kristian will be in the middle of one situation and a totally new character (or more) will show up. After a bit of an encounter, they disappear again. I had difficulty figuring out where all these characters fit into what was happening and which ones are actually the good guys and the bad guys.
I will be honest and admit that although I kept trying to read and understand the story, I eventually gave up before I reached the end. The author’s style is creative but with so much continuous action, it was more like watching a movie or TV program than the type of book I usually enjoy. I like to get to know the protagonists better as I read a novel and I never could quite understand where Kristian was coming from. I actually believe that this is a generational thing and not due to any deficit in the book itself. I am quite certain that younger readers will probably thoroughly enjoy the story.
I would like to encourage the author to continue with her writing. She has a definite gift with words and should have an excellent future. It’s not her fault that this old lady prefers other genres.

I began writing at a very young age. I don’t think I even started school yet when I came out with my first children’s titles. The Swan Princess and Flamingo Queen was followed by a sequel The Duck Prince and Unicorn King (because I thought it was unfair that only the mom and sister had to go through transformations), and Julian and Juliette had many reprints- all carefully printed and illustrated by myself before moving to their final destination: safekeeping in my mom’s possession.
Years later, I resumed my writing craft near the end of elementary school with two series of chapter books I wrote and then read aloud to my family. However, it was not until I watched Marvel’s Avengers that I found my true muse (Captain America, obviously). The story was so enthralling, I could do nothing but pick up the pen and compose my first published trilogy: The Ninja and Hunter Series published when I was sixteen. This was followed by the tree books of The Howling Twenties two years later.
But, no longer a ‘young adult’ I’ve moved on beyond that genre to the next age group: New Adult. That genre infamously known for its many vices and sins. However, we as Christians are called to “Take every thought captive to obey Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5b), and a genre targeted toward twenty-somethings should be no exception.
So this is my first release in the New Adult genre. Kristian Clark might be a secret-agent-turned-private-investigator-turned-secret-agent again, but he still deals with the same problems all twenty-somethings face: adapting to a career, longing for a soul mate, and searching for deeper meaning in all the noise. With a little intrigue and cool gadgets on the side because, well, he is a secret-agent-turned-private-investigator-turned-secret-agent after all.

MY REVIEW:
No sooner than professor Preston Barclay arrives on campus to teach a couple of summer classes, rumors have spread that he intends to investigate the death of his friend and fellow professor. Despite the police evidence that points to suicide, Press is drawn into an ever-growing web of situations where nothing is as it seems. Was his friend’s death actually murder and was it just one part of a farther reaching crime problem?
As expected, I thoroughly enjoyed this latest Preston Barclay Mystery, “Murder in Disguise”. The author deftly manages to combine drama, mystery, humor, and a touch of romance while also educating his readers on the Christian history and other facts taught by the professor. Characterizations are excellent as Taylor manages to make each one seem naturally realistic. A few surprises along the way kept things interesting as did the growing romance between Press and Mara.
I also liked the way the author managed to tie current campus politics and practices into the story. It helped confirm suspicions of why many of our young people have developed their current mindsets. If only more of our educators were like Press and Mara and Professor Collier.
“Murder in Disguise” is a terrific book and so is the entire series. This series would be one that many men would enjoy as it is told from Preston’s point of view and the romantic content is fairly subtle.
