Tidewater Bride by Laura Frantz

MY REVIEW:

As a lover of historical fiction I have been a fan of the novels by Laura Frantz from her very first offering. I love the opportunity to learn something new about the early years of our nation through the eyes of someone who experienced it firsthand, albeit in a fictional account. Tidewater Bride stayed true to my expectations and I enjoyed the book very much.

There is a lot going on within the pages of Tidewater Bride including interaction between the hero and heroine, although not in a romantic manner for much of their story. Without the interference of an early romance, I felt that I got to know both characters a bit better as I walked through their daily lives with them. Multiple other characters including the tobacco brides, a couple of endearing children, the Naturals, and household slaves as well as a villain or two, helped flesh out the tale even more. A strong but non-obtrusive thread of faith was woven throughout the narrative and it was obvious that the faith of the main characters influenced the way they lived their lives.

Tidewater Bride has it all, interesting historical facts, vivid imagery, a bit of action, danger, and mystery, plus a lovely romance and a satisfying ending. History lovers would do well to pick up a copy soon. Be sure to check out other books by this most excellent author.

Endless Mercy byTracie Peterson and Kimberley Woodhouse

MY REVIEW:

Endless Mercy was exactly the kind of novel I have come to expect from Tracie Peterson and Kimberly Woodhouse. It contained just the right blend of drama, action, mystery, romance and faith to make it an enjoyable read.

The narrative contained a strong gospel message yet conveyed it without becoming preachy. Some characters who were professing Christians wrestled with personal issues such as mercy and forgiveness. Another character who had been raised by believing parents had allowed tragedy to keep him away from God. All were portrayed realistically and were easy to relate to rather than the picture perfect Christians sometimes depicted.

The second book in the Treasures of Nome series, Endless Mercy features youngest Powell sister Madysen who finds herself confused about several choices presented to her. I found myself wanting to warn her away from a particular man and to turn her affections toward a different one. Other family drama filled the everyday lives of the Powell family and although this volume ended satisfactorily, there are still a few unanswered questions that will hopefully be revealed in the next installment.

Endless Mercy is a fine example of why Tracie Peterson and Kimberly Woodhouse books have remained favorites among historical fiction fans.

This series is very near and dear to us because the Powell sisters in the books are actually named after three beautiful girls we adore. They were music students of mine in Colorado and when Tracie and I had a book signing for In the Shadow of Denali, the red-headed, musical sisters all came. Tracie made the comment that someone should write a book about them…so of course…we did!

I wish you could hear the girls play and sing in real life. They are such talented musicians, and I love them dearly. Huge thanks go to Monica and Merle Powell for allowing us to take their three girls and make fictional characters out of them.

The Thief of Blackfriars Lane by Michelle Griep

MY REVIEW:

With each new book by Michelle Griep that I read, I fall more in love with her writing style. I have been a fan since the very first one but I sincerely believe that The Thief of Blackfriars Lane is definitely the best one yet!

I have been an avid reader for more years than I care to admit and I found this delightful tale to have an original plot with unique characters and enough twists and surprises to keep even the shrewdest reader guessing. The hero is a somewhat bumbling and naive young constable whose desire is to save the world from crime. Somehow everything he attempts turns out so wrong that he comes within inches of losing his job multiple times. Of course one of his first street encounters is with Kit Turner, a young woman wise to the ways of the street who prides herself on not stealing but isn’t above conning some money to help those who are in desperate need. Somehow Jackson and Kit find themselves joining forces in order to find a missing man and what an adventure it is.

Through the author’s vivid descriptions I found myself traipsing the sewers beneath the city streets or running down a darkened back alley alongside Kit and Jackson. I could almost smell the brine and fish from the Thames and the stench of the sewers. A number of notable characters filled the pages of this story and several of them had a surprise or two in store for its readers. This book is a must read so I will leave a few secrets for readers to discover on their own. Unless you absolutely hate historical fiction blended with action and suspense, you must buy this book!

Zootopia in Victorian London

I admit it. I like kid’s movies. You know, the animated sort that entertain both young and old alike. One of my favorites is Zootopia, a rollicking adventure about a bunny whose dream it is to be a police officer and make the streets of the big city safe for all animals. In fact, I loved it so much that I thought why not set it in Victorian London?

So I did.

And that’s what The Thief of Blackfriars Lane is all about, but that meant I had to do a little digging into the history of police force of the late 1800’s. Here’s what I learned…

The Metropolitan Police (founded in 1829 by Robert Peel) was composed mostly of young men, many of whom were recruited from rural areas. Few were from London, the philosophy being that they would thus be free from local patronage and influence.

It is a bit of an anomaly that hero Jackson Forge and his friend, Officer Baggett, carry a sidearm. Some did, but most relied on truncheons. It was up to the officer. Revolvers were usually only supplied after the death of a police officer by an armed criminal, at the discretion of the Divisional Officer, or if a constable requested to use one during night duty. In 1884, after the deaths of several police officers, the Home Office ordered nearly a thousand revolvers from Webley & Scott to be issued to branches of the London police. . .which is where I got the idea of a shipment of guns for the villain to attempt to steal.

Police detectives were recruited from within the ranks of existing uniformed officers. There were actually women on the force at the time, employed as police matrons. But these were behind-the-scenes workers, tasked with guarding women and children. If my heroine, Kit, were to be out in public, serving as Jackson’s assistant, she’d have to keep her job secret. The first female police officer wasn’t seen on the streets until 1919.

And so, armed with that information, I wrote the adventures of not a police bunny and a con artist fox, but of Jackson Forge, a fresh-faced constable, and his thorn in the side, swindler Kit Turner. Snatch up your own copy and enjoy a visit to Victorian London!

Lethal Intent by Cara Putman

MY REVIEW:

I love Cara Putman’s skillful combination of the law, suspense, romance, and faith. I actually prefer her succinct explanations of the legal process which tells me just enough for me to understand without making me feel as though I’ve been through a university class on law. Vivid description, excellent dialogue, natural friendships, and true-to-life frailties combined with realistic action and danger made Lethal Intent a true page turner.

Caroline Bragg’s longtime close friendship with Brandon Lancaster has just begun to look as though it might develop into more when she accepts a new job as the lawyer for a pharmaceutical research firm. On her very first day on the job she discovers one indirect connection of Brandon to her firm through a child from his foster care facility who is a candidate for experimental treatment. Later she also discovers that Brandon has invested in the firm and she fears their relationship may create a conflict of interest. Aside from that more than one death connected to the firm and several things that do not add up puzzles Caroline and she is determined to get to the bottom of it.

Lethal Intent is another fully absorbing novel from Putman that keeps this author on my must read list. I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend it and all her previous novels to readers who enjoy legal suspense novels.

Each novel has a unique genesis story. The spark that launches it into a journey of 90,000 words. For Lethal Intent, that journey began with a friend’s journey of childhood leukemia with her oldest. From watching their family wind through years of treatment including cutting edge therapy trials. Then it developed with the Immortal Life of Henrietta Lack and the thought what would someone be willing to do if they believed they’d found the next strain of immortal cells. The lead characters made appearances in other books, but now would have their opportunity to step to center stage. The story morphed and changed, dictated by the vagaries of the law and changes.

Each story has a spark. For Caroline it was a brainstorming session with my writing buddies Rachel Hauck, Colleen Coble, and Denise Hunter. Would that generate this need to keep sibling groups together? And then the law changes and the fabric of your professional identity and something so much deeper is threatened.

Each story has a spark. The pharmaceutical start-up where ethics collides with the desire to save children. The push to do whatever it takes overshadowing the guardrails of the law. If they expected silence, they hired the wrong woman. But does Caroline really have the strength to battle and does she need to?

Lethal Intent grew from each of these sparks and many more to develop into a story I can’t wait for you to read. In the process I learned immense amounts about CAR-T cell therapies and foster care law. Most of all, I hope you’ll fall into the pages and be engrossed in a story you can’t bring yourself to put down until the final page.

MY REVIEW:

I always know that I may as well settle in and make myself comfortable when I pick up a new book by Dana Mentink because I will not want to move for awhile. Her books are always guaranteed to keep me turning pages as quickly as possible because almost anything can and will happen at any moment. Not only is there ample action, danger, and suspense to hold my attention but the author never fails to create a convincing plot combined with a strong thread of faith. It also does not hurt that a dog or a child or even sometimes both are often included.

Cold Case Pursuit contains all of the above in spades. The villain is evil, creepy, and always seems to be one step ahead even while taunting Penny, one of his intended victims. Tyler was the perfect hero as he dedicated himself to protecting Penny and working hard to solve the case, even after a serious injury. He began by trying to be an encouragement to her but it was easy to see that a more serious relationship was in store for them.I enjoyed reading about the K9 division of the police force as well as examples of how they worked.

Do not allow the sweet cover image fool you into passing this book by. Despite the cute dog and child, Cold Case Pursuit has one of the most dastardly plots ever!

I love book covers with adorable children on them, don’t you? There’s something so angelic about those wee folks on the covers. I have two bear cubs myself, young adults now, and I love them devotedly. Tell you what though. Sometimes, just occasionally mind you, they were a wee bit naughty. Don’t tell anyone, but one reason I enjoyed writing Cold Case Pursuit so much is that hero Tyler is the single dad of a little girl named Rain who is….er…a handful. Sure, she’s adorable, but she’s prone to disobedience and the occasional tendency to flush things down the toilet. So in addition to the edge of your seat pursuit of a murderous clown killer, there are the shenanigans of a precocious preschooler, a highly trained yet distractible police K-9, and a romance that doesn’t exactly run smoothly. Fun to write? You betcha! I hope you enjoy coming along with me on this True Blue adventure!
