Fireline by Kate Angelo – Chasing Fire: Montana Book 5

MY REVIEW:

The action and suspense builds in the fifth installment of the Chasing Fire: Montana series. Fire Line  finds the Jude County firefighting team facing the growing threat of wildfire along with an arson attack that destroyed most of their headquarters. Nova Burns hopes to be chosen as the new crew chief but a growing attraction to crew member Booth Wilder has her having second thoughts. But Booth is hiding something so her feelings are conflicted.

Dangerous men are at work in the wilderness and one is determined to get revenge for his brother’s death. They are also looking for the same man Booth is trying to find so time is of the essence. Danger is around every corner and survival is questionable.

As always, I appreciated the interaction between imperfect characters whose attempts to do the right thing was admirable. More clues were added to the mystery that has tracked through every book of the series. Although I am anxious for a resolution, I dread the end of this series.

If you are a lover of adventure-suspense novels, Fire Line may be just the book for you. I would highly recommend beginning with book one to get the entire story.

MY REVIEW:

So many secrets! It seems like every character might have one or more. A son whose father doesn’t know exists and they’ve actually been working together. A serious health problem the father is determined to keep hidden from his daughter and everyone else if he can. Not only that but he has secret plans on how he intends to handle things. Of course all the secrets will eventually come out as Charlie and Jayne are reunited as a wildfire threatens the fire camp she runs. Will Charlie find a new reason to live? That is if they all manage to survive the fire as well as dangerous men with evil intentions.

Tension and danger mount with each new installment of the Chasing Fire: Montana series. Firestorm amps it up another notch with not only danger and suspense but intense human emotions exhibited by the characters themselves. Plenty of action kept me turning the pages as I hoped for the best. I enjoyed how bits and pieces of the mystery have been revealed over the course of the series and am eager to learn the outcome – even if I hate for the series to end.

I am thankful that I have had a chance to read and review the books of this series and hope that other readers will also give them a chance. I don’t think they will be disappointed.

Genre: Romantic Suspense

SECRETS. BETRAYAL. SACRIFICE.
THIS TIME, THEY’RE NOT JUST FIGHTING FIRE.
An original series created by bestselling authors Susan May Warren and Lisa Phillips.

He thought his life was over…and then she walked back in.

Charlie Benning has always been a rescuer—first with the Last Chance County Fire and Rescue team, and now as a firefighter with the Jude County Hotshots. But this summer isn’t about saving lives—it’s about hiding his own terrible secret. A secret he’s keeping from his estranged daughter, Alexis.

But fate is about to intervene.

Will their secrets destroy their second chance?

Jayne Price raised her son, Orion, on her own just fine, thank you. And now, she runs Wildlands Academy, a summer camp that teaches kids how to fight forest fires and confront their own teenage angst—kids like Alexis Benning, who clearly has a chip on her shoulder about her semi-estranged, firefighter father.

And Jayne has her own issues, like not wanting her only son to join the elite smokejumping corps. It’s enough that he’s risking his life as a hotshot on the Jude County team.

Then the wildfire turns its force onto the camp and suddenly the hotshots show up to help her fight it. Only problem…the last person she expects is for her former flame, Charlie Benning—the man she can’t forget—to show up working alongside her son.

Rather, his son.

Who he doesn’t know exists.

And then Charlie discovers the secret she’s been keeping, and he’s torn between anger and the long-simmering love that refuses to die. And Jayne isn’t about to let go of the man she loves a second time. But if the blazing wildfire isn’t enough, a dangerous and relentless killer is on the prowl in the woods…

Now, with the camp cut off from the outside world and the fire closing in, it’s a race against time as Charlie, Jayne, Orion, and a team of courageous smokejumpers join forces to protect the campers against a merciless inferno and a murderer. But the biggest threat of all might be Charlie’s devastating secret that could destroy the happy ending they’ve waited for so long.

Prepare for an edge-of-your-seat journey that will leave you breathless until the very last page, in book four of the Chasing Fire: Montana series.

Where Trees Touch the Sky by Karen Barnett

Welcome to the Takeover + Review Blitz for Where Trees Touch the Sky by Karen Barnett hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

MY REVIEW:

I have always enjoyed Karen Barnett’s books that give her readers a glimpse of the history of our National Parks. Where Trees Touch the Sky was a welcome addition to my library. A split time novel, the narrative tells the stories of a modern park ranger and her aunt who played a role in establishing the Redwood National  Park.

Rich in details, the book portrays the battle between big lumber companies and the conservationists who wanted to save the giant trees. Marion was dedicated to saving the forest but her romance with the son of a lumber mill owner forced her to make choices that would change her life. Years later, her niece Jane became a ranger in the National Park that was partially established due to Marion’s efforts. Handicapped by a bout with polio, Jane is determined to prove herself capable. Her pride in her aunt leads her to a joint effort to produce a film about Marion’s life that reveals secrets Marion would rather keep hidden.

Where Trees Touch the Sky is an enjoyable read filled with imperfect characters who nevertheless desire to be their best. It is a tale of perseverance, dedication, and faith with a touch of romance in both eras. A surprise or two should please most readers of this inspirational story.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Title: Where Trees Touch the Sky
Series: National Parks
Author: Karen Barnett
Publisher: Kregel
Release Date: August 13, 2024
Genre: Christian Fiction, Dual Timeline

Some secrets have shadows as long as the redwoods are tall.

In the early 1920s, the accelerating destruction of the California redwoods is more than nature-loving Marion Baker can bear. Throwing herself headlong into the work of the Save the Redwoods League, she is shocked to learn that Frank Duncan, a man she’s grown to love, is the son of one of the area’s worst timber barons. Though devastated by the betrayal, she realizes this could also be an opportunity–if only she can convince him to help preserve her favorite grove from his father’s greedy grasp. Is her love strong enough to persuade him to save these precious trees? Or will Marion choose to sacrifice her beliefs to keep Frank by her side?

Nearly fifty years later, in 1972, polio survivor June Turner is deeply proud of the legacy her great aunt Marion has left as a redwood warrior. And despite her disability, June is determined to prove herself capable as a ranger at the recently established Redwood National Park, even if it means taking to the trails with her crutch in hand. What better way to carry on the family tradition of preserving God?s magnificent creation?

When aspiring film student Adam Garner approaches June to help make a documentary about Marion’s life, she swiftly grabs the opportunity to spread her aunt’s worthy reputation. That is, until they unearth a secret that might shatter the family legacy. In the scramble for answers, June may lose not only her family pride but also her own dreams.

Karen Barnett’s beautifully crafted split-time novel, set against the majestic backdrop of a beloved national park, immerses the reader in history that feels as fresh as if it happened yesterday.
