Fatal Code by Natalie Walters

MY REVIEW:

Fatal Code is a fast paced, suspense filled novel that moves at breath-taking speed from the beginning to the end as the SNAP team works with aerospace engineer Elinor Mitchell to prevent a major catastrophe before it is too late.

As a suspense lover, I found the plot to be near perfect with enough action, mystery, and suspense to keep me turning those pages. Characterization was wonderful. Kekoa was the perfect mix of handsome hunk, tormented soul, and team clown. He was honorable to a fault and determined to protect Elinor at all costs. Elinor was a delightful nerd, serious about her work but with a self-deprecating sense of humor. She and Kekoa were a great team even if she did not acknowledge it at first. I loved how well the team worked together and the family like ties they shared. I eagerly anticipate the next installment of this excellent series.

When the Meadow Blooms by Ann H. Gabhart

MY REVIEW:

When the Meadow Blooms is a tale from Ann Gabhart that will wring out the reader’s heart yet leave her filled with hope. I so enjoyed this story of the Meadows family, left to survive on their own after the death of husband and father – that is until the mother Rose is diagnosed with tuberculosis and must recuperate in a sanitorium. Thinking she will be well in a few weeks, she leaves her two daughters in an orphanage, not knowing how mistreated they will be. In desperation they turn to her husband’s brother, a recluse who usually avoids people at all costs.

It was wonderful to observe as Rose and her daughters gradually worked their magic on Dirk’s wounded heart and the change that was wrought in each of them as they slowly became the family each of them needed. The steady plot takes the reader on an unforgettable emotional journey with the Meadows family as they find their way to Meadowland.

When the Meadow Blooms was a delight to read and I highly recommend it.

In Honor’s Defense by Karen Witemeyer

MY REVIEW:

Karen Witemeyer has long been one of my must read authors and In Honor’s Defense just enforces the reasons why I love her books. This author has skills that make her characters come to life on the pages against backdrops that cause her readers to almost feel like they are there. It doesn’t hurt that she also manages to insert a villain or two or three, plenty of action and suspense, and a touch of humor in just the right places. And let’s not forget that every tale is laced through and through with faith and scripture that both teaches and encourages the reader.

In Honor’s Defense is the perfect ending for the Hanger’s Horsemen series. I have enjoyed each installment of the series and would have been quite happy for it to continue. However, if it had to end, it could not have been wrapped up more perfectly. I loved how both Luke and Damaris were such complete opposites but complemented each other so well. I also enjoyed those moments when they stepped out of their usual nature when circumstances demanded.

Although this book is one of a series, it can very easily stand on its own. I highly recommend it as well as any other book by this talented author.

Meet Luke and Damaris

As the Hanger’s Horsemen series comes to a close, I’m thrilled to introduce you to Luke Davenport and Damaris Baxter. If you haven’t read the other books in this series, don’t worry. This one stands on its own just fine.

Luke

Luke Davenport is a former cavalry officer who is part of an elite squad of men known as Hanger’s Horsemen. When creating Damaris’s character, I gave her two of my favorite hobbies—reading and cross-stitching. She shares other similarities with me as well. She’s a quiet person who dislikes making waves, but when family needs her, there’s nothing she won’t do to help. Her questionable baking skills might also have found some inspiration in my personal experience. Just ask my husband about my famous transparent chocolate chip cookies. 

Opposites Attract?

I love to explore what brings people together, and while it’s a common idea that opposites attract, I’ve always believed that there must be some core commonalities beneath the differences to bind a couple together for a lifetime. So, while Luke and Damaris seem to be stark opposites—he an adventure-seeking soldier used to solving problems with guns and fists; she a quiet, proper lady used to escaping problems with books and needlework—they actually have several core commonalities. They both crave belonging and family, they both value God’s Word, and they both have a strong, protective instinct toward those they care about. This core common ground is what serves as the foundation for their relationship.

Now that you’ve been introduced to Luke and Damaris, I hope you’ll join them on the adventure that leads them to love.

Songs That Could Have Been by Amanda Wen

MY REVIEW:

The Songs That Could Have Been is a dual time novel that takes the reader from the present time back to the 1950s where it tells the story of Lauren’s grandmother Rosie and Ephraim during their high school years. Present day Rosie is fast sinking into dementia. When she continues to bring up the name Ephraim, Lauren and her brother decide to attempt to find the mysterious man. At the same time, Lauren has also encountered the man she once loved and has somehow begun to renew their friendship. Both have unresolved issues from their past that could once again destroy their relationship.

Beautifully expressed, this novel covers a lot of territory from racial prejudice and forbidden love, to addiction, to eating disorders. There were times during their search that I felt that Lauren and her brother were intruding into their grandmother’s privacy but the touching end overcame my trepidation.  This is a wonderful book with endearing characters. I was encouraged by their tenacity and how each of them was able to overcome their past through the help of others and their faith.
