Still, you did ask to take a look.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charla cupped a palm above her eyes and blinked against the mid-afternoon sun. \u201cYes, I did.\u201d Except the print-out didn\u2019t do the house justice. It didn\u2019t fully capture the charm. The nostalgia. The magnetic appeal that drew goosebumps. It didn\u2019t convey the feeling the Ramsey home evoked\u2014one of overwhelming love and longing. She stepped closer and gazed upward at the towering structure. \u201cDetails, Mr. Marshall?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell,\u201d her real estate agent paused. \u201cDo you think\u2014I mean, would it be\u2026presumptuous of me to suggest we be on a first name basis? After all, we\u2019ve known each other for a month now. Around here, formalities don\u2019t hold water. In Ruby, we\u2019re all friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charla shifted her gaze for a moment and smiled. \u201cYou\u2019re right. First names, it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGreat. Now about those details\u2014this is a solid-built home, circa 1944. Excellent condition. Original woodwork, cedar closets. New heating and air, new roof, plumbing, and additional updates while preserving the home\u2019s integrity. There\u2019s an in-ground storm cellar out back, as well as a garden shed and a small garage. As the fact sheet indicates, it comes with a homeowner\u2019s warranty. There\u2019s a nice rolling meadow and fifteen wooded acres.\u201d Jerry cleared his throat then and presented the asking price. \u201cNow, there are some dandy places we haven\u2019t even seen yet. Why don\u2019t I show you a few of those, Charla? A number that are better suited to your\u2026uh\u2026needs, and more modestly priced?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It should have irked her that he thought her both incapable and out of touch, but he was so sincere and likeable, Charla couldn\u2019t help but laugh. \u201cI\u2019m single, Jerry, not incapacitated. And with a price tag like that, I bet the owner is willing to negotiate, right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, a bit, I imagine. But still\u2014we\u2019re talking a whole lot of money here. Are you sure you still want to see the place?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI appreciate your concern, but what part of <em>fat commission<\/em> do you find distasteful?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was her agent\u2019s turn to laugh. \u201cSorry. Didn\u2019t mean to patronize.\u201d He extended an arm with a grand flourish. \u201cShall we, then?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbsolutely.\u201d She moved past him, excitement drumming in her veins. Drawn by an invisible force that mystified her, Charla hurried up the painted steps and waited for Jerry on the massive front porch. She needn\u2019t look any further. This was it. This was the house. Even the imaginary scent of chocolate chip cookies confirmed it. \u201cI can\u2019t believe this home is still on the market.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, well, Edwin\u2019s waited a while for the right buyer.\u201d Jerry met her at the door and inserted a key in the lockbox. \u201cSaid the good Lord would send that person when the time was right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He swung open the door and Charla\u2019s world tilted. The time was definitely right.
