Recovering from the death of his fiancée and a false accusation of murder, Buchanan has found his previous ambitions unrewarding. Now he prefers offering legal services to the poor and the underrepresented from his “office” at local coffee bar The Freudian Sip. With his new friends, the philosophizing Father Bob and basketball-playing Sister Mary Veritas, Buchanan has found a new family of sorts.
One of his first clients is a mysterious woman who arrives with her six-year-old daughter. They are being illegally evicted from a downtown transient hotel, an interest that Ty soon discovers is represented by his old law firm and his former best friend, Al Bradshaw. I enjoyed it so much that I purchased more of his books and Bell became another of my favorite authors. I was excited to find that Try Darkness, the next book in the Ty Buchanan series was on the CFBA July list. I was not disappointed.

In Try Darkness former hot-shot corporate attorney Ty Buchanan has started a private practice. Because of events that took place in Try Dying, he has become disenchanted with corporate law and is sympathetic to the underdog, taking many cases without payment. When a new client is found dead, Ty takes it upon himself to find her killer and protect her daughter.

Try Darkness is filled with mystery, suspense, dramatic courtroom scenes, danger, and surprises. Bell’s characters are well developed with believable human strengths and flaws with which the reader can identify. I would consider this series to be in the same genre with the writings of James Gresham; however I find Bell’s style even more readable and enjoyable.

This week, the Christian Fiction Blog Alliance is introducing Try Darkness (Center Street – July 30, 2008) by James Scott Bell ABOUT THE AUTHOR: JAMES SCOTT BELL is a former trial lawyer who now writes full time.
