MY REVIEW:<\/strong><\/p>\n

I always enjoy a story by Jody Hedlund and The Last Chance Cowboy<\/em> was not exception. Obviously Dylan had sown more than his share of wild oats but was finally making every effort to change his ways and become a man his family could be proud of. What a surprise when midwife Catherine showed up with a child he didn’t know he had!<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, Dylan was determined to do the right thing and make a home for his baby and the woman he thought was its mother. For much of the book the misunderstanding continued and I did have to wonder why Catherine didn’t realize that Dylan thought she was the woman he had been with. Other than that somewhat unbelievable detail, the book was an interesting and fun read with a strong theme about God’s forgiveness and His love for His children. It was gratifying to watch Dylan’s care for Catherine and his child even before he grew to love her.<\/p>\n

I have missed a book or two in this series and plan to go back to read them as soon as I can. I do love Hedlund’s books and historical westerns are a particular favorite.<\/p>\n

What drew you to Colorado as a setting for your latest historical romance series?<\/strong><\/p>\n

When I was a child, I lived up in the high country in Granby in Middle Park. Then my husband and I lived in Denver for a few years while he went to grad school. So in some ways, Colorado feels like home.<\/p>\n

I was also drawn to writing about Colorado because of the ruggedness of the setting, especially in the 1800\u2019s. It was difficult for those first settlers to survive in such a harsh and unforgiving place, especially without all the modern conveniences we\u2019re used to.<\/p>\n

Not only that, but I\u2019m truly astounded by the beauty and majesty of the West. There\u2019s nothing quite as stunning as the Rocky Mountains!<\/p>\n

Why do you think readers always enjoy cowboy heroes?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I actually asked that question of readers and here are a couple of answers I received:<\/p>\n

One reader said: I like their endurance and steadfastness. Their innate ability to deal with animals and athleticism to work in an outdoor environment that is many times unforgiving.<\/p>\n

Another reader said: Cowboys protect each other, provide for their animals, help neighbors, and celebrate life. No matter how hard it is. They find happiness in the simple things of life. Determination, grit, are words to describe them. And love \u2026 oh yes how fiercely they love and protect their one and only.<\/p>\n

I think the love of cowboys has to do with their reputation for their integrity and hard work ethic. Of course it doesn\u2019t hurt that we think of most cowboys as hunks. Right<\/p>\n

Are readers always promised a \u201chappily ever after\u201d in your novels? Why or why not?<\/strong><\/p>\n

As an avid reader of romance myself, I not only expect a HEA, it\u2019s what I love! Since, I\u2019m writing the books I would love to read, I wouldn\u2019t ever be able to write anything but a HEA! I\u2019m of the opinion that there are too many bittersweet and mediocre endings in real life. So with fiction, I want a book to inspire me and give me courage that I can be a better person. I hope readers feel the same with my novels!<\/p>\n

When did you first begin writing stories?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019m pretty sure I was born with a pen in one hand and a notebook in the other. Since my earliest days, I loved making up stories and writing them down. The passion followed me into adulthood. And after many twists and turns along the path, I\u2019ve finally been able to channel that passion into a full time writing career.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>What was the name of your first book?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Preacher\u2019s Bride<\/em> was my first published book.<\/p>\n

How did you get into the Christian\/historical fiction genre?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I love reading historicals, so naturally that\u2019s what I\u2019m drawn to write. I\u2019m fascinated with all of the things that happen in other times and places that seem so foreign to us now. I really appreciate when historical facts are woven into books seamlessly so that I\u2019m learning but don\u2019t really realize I am. And I hope that I can do that in my books too.<\/p>\n

Who was your favorite author when you were younger?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Anne of Green Gables<\/em> by L.M. Montgomery was one of my favorites as a child because it played a role in developing my creativity as a writer. (Followed closely by A Little Princess<\/em> and Little Women<\/em> because they also featured strong, creative girls.)<\/p>\n

How would you describe your writing style in three words?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sweet, clean, with sizzle<\/p>\n

How many books have you published so far?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Over 40<\/p>\n

Do you have any habits or rituals as a writer?<\/strong><\/p>\n

When I\u2019m in first draft mode, I give myself a daily word count six days a week, and then I make myself write until I hit my goal even if that means I have to write all day and into the evening (most days that doesn\u2019t happen though, thankfully). I\u2019m pretty tough on myself about making my daily goals!<\/p>\n

What habits would you encourage others to take up to be a more productive writer? <\/strong><\/p>\n

I believe every writer should set realistic goals for whatever life season they\u2019re in. For example, when my kids were younger and I was in the thick of homeschooling, I set my daily word count goal at 500 words a day. That was realistic for me at that stage. I made myself write that amount every day so that I built good habits of self-discipline and focus.<\/p>\n

What do you snack on or drink while writing?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Coffee all the way! Black and lots of it!<\/p>\n

How do you overcome writer\u2019s block?<\/strong> Because of my stringent daily word count goal (and not allowing myself to veer from it), I push through writer\u2019s block by simply writing whatever comes to mind, even if it\u2019s not particularly inspiring.<\/p>\n

Are you an \u201cedit-as-you-go\u201d writer or do you wait until the very end before you do any editing?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I start my writing day by re-reading a portion of what I wrote the previous day. I edit that lightly before moving on. But mostly I wait until the end to turn on my internal editor.<\/p>\n

What would you say is the most common mistake new writers make?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s normal and natural to get excited about finishing a first book. But I\u2019ve seen many writers eager to publish (and even rush into publishing) that first book. It\u2019s almost always wise to wait to seek publication (or indie publish) until you have completed several books, taken classes, read writing craft books, and had critique partners.<\/p>\n
