Jane, Kyle, and Melanie each retreat into their own private world where they fluctuate between blaming themselves and each other for Max&#8217;s disappearance.\u00a0 Jane and Kyle&#8217;s marriage suffers as they wallow separately in their grief.\u00a0 Once sweet and loving, Melanie becomes an unmanageable teen who surprises her parents with an off-the-wall solution that also affects people outside their immediate family.<\/p>\n<p>When Jane begins to receive strange phone calls followed by several incidents of harassment, they suspect it could be the kidnapper. Six months later, the family is a shadow of  its former self: Melanie blames herself and is acting out and  rebellious; Jane is obsessed with finding Max; and Kyle, a lawyer,  struggles to cope with his own grief\u2014and a persistent suspicion that one  of his cases is connected to Max\u2019s disappearance.<\/p>\n<p>With her  family in turmoil and her marriage on the rocks, Jane thinks things  can\u2019t get any worse. Then when an affair and an unexpected pregnancy  threaten to tear the Madisons\u2019 lives apart, an anonymous caller leads to  a break in the case.
