MY REVIEW:
I really wanted to like this movie. I made myself watch it until the very end, hoping against hope that Red would hurry up and get a clue before something really terrible happened. I don’t deal with visual violence very well and actually got up and left the room more than once because I was afraid of what was coming next.
The movie begins with Red returning home after a short incarceration. Red has an attitude. It seems that he blames his police officer mother for his problems – or at least the fact that his dad left them and she has tried to raise him and his younger brother on her own. Over and over Red gives in to peer pressure from friends he should avoid, making one bad decision after another that get him deeper and deeper in trouble. Unfortunately every time he has the opportunity to choose to do the right thing, he makes the wrong choice. The movie goes on interminably like this with alcohol, drugs, sex, violence, and criminal activity until it all hits the fan in a heartbreaking way.
Yes, Red had to hit bottom before his redemption but I did not need to be exposed to close to two hours of his descent. There was almost no indication that “Ashes of Eden” is even a Christian film with only a passing reference to God or Jesus. Then at the very end the viewer is abruptly treated to a brief scene with Red sharing his testimony with a room full of men in prison garb – very brief. Nowhere do we see Red making a decision for Christ but we must assume he did based on the fact that he is sharing with other prisoners.
This is not a movie that I would recommend to anyone and would strongly advise parents to watch before allowing their children to view it. The movie is unrated but I did see more than one site that had strong parental warnings about it. One reviewer said he would rate it at least a PG-13. I would have to agree. I am much older than that and it did not sit well with me.
A copy of this DVD was provided for review by FishFlix.
ABOUT THE MOVIE:
18-year-old Red made some bad choices. He’s done his time, but he’s still paying the consequences. He’s finding that having a bad reputation and being in the wrong place at the wrong time are an unfortunate combination – even when you’re trying to do the right thing.
Secretly selling stolen drugs in order to help his police officer mother pay the mortgage starts a bloodbath between rival dealers. Lives are lost, relationships destroyed, faith is questioned. And, Red is in the center of the spotlight. Can this gritty cautionary tale end with redemption? Perhaps. But, it comes with a price.

A romantic-drama, OLD FASHIONED centers on Clay Walsh, a former frat boy who gives up his reckless carousing and now runs an antique shop in a small Midwestern college town. There, he has become notorious for his lofty and outdated theories on love and romance as well as for his devout belief in God. When Amber Hewson, a free-spirited young woman with a restless soul, drifts into the area and rents the apartment above his shop, she finds herself surprisingly drawn to his strong faith and noble ideas, which are new and intriguing to her. And Clay, though he tries to fight and deny it, simply cannot resist being attracted to her spontaneous and passionate embrace of life. Ultimately, Clay must step out from behind his relational theories and Amber must overcome her own fears and deep wounds as the two of them, together, attempt the impossible: an “old-fashioned” and God-honoring courtship in contemporary America.

MY REVIEW:
The creators of OLD FASHIONED are to be commended for their attempt to counter the message of free love without repercussions that is pushed by most forms of entertainment offered in our current society. Its primary focus is on treating women with respect and that fact that it is possible to save physical intimacy for marriage.
I will admit that for at least the first half of the film, I thought that Clay was way too self-righteous in the way he came across. I admired him for standing up for his values but his attitude would (and did) turn most people off. Amber, on the other hand, seemed to be just a little too flippant. At first I thought that Clay was just a challenge to her and she was determined to break him down. Somewhere along the way, she actually became attracted to the very traits that she had ridiculed at first.
Despite his self-righteous attitude, Clay’s character was appealing and he did loosen up before the end. I personally thought the very best part of the film was when his aunt told him exactly what she thought about his attitude.
I would recommend that parents make it a point for their teens to see this movie at least once. It’s time for our youth to know that Hollywood does not have all the answers.

MY REVIEW:
Overall, “The Identical” was an enjoyable, family friendly movie that featured lots of music. It was a story that emphasized following God’s plan for your life and it did a good job of showing what could happen when trying to follow the dreams of someone else.
I did find the obvious Elvis slant a bit distracting, especially when Elvis was actually mentioned in the film. The young man just looked, moved and sang too much like Elvis for my personal preference. It would have been much more original and engaging without that unmistakeable resemblance.
Otherwise, my husband and I enjoyed the film and were quite happy with the way it ended with family secrets revealed and restoration of the entire family. I thought the actors did a good job in their roles and the cinematography was excellent.
Don’t believe all the bad press about this movie. It is fun to watch and if you like music, it is all the more so.

MY REVIEW:
My husband and I watched the “Holy Ghost” movie over the weekend. When I agreed to review it I had absolutely no idea what to expect but I can say I was pleasantly surprised to watch the featured men interact with and minister to strangers they encountered as they followed the direction of the Holy Spirit.
In addition to footage of various team members speaking to and praying for people in various public settings, the film has frequent appearances by well-known people who talk about the Holy Spirit or explain various doctrinal differences, etc. I was particularly taken with scenes from a concert featuring Brian Welch and those shot on location in India.
It is simply amazing what God will do when one follows the lead of the Holy Spirit and steps out in boldness. It was so evident how many people need Jesus and how the approach taken by the men in this film was so much more productive than what is often encountered in evangelistic circles. The love of God was so strong that it was almost irresistible. This movie is strong proof that the church needs to go outside its own walls and take Jesus to the streets by showing His love to those who need him.
I am afraid, however, that this film will not be very well received by many Christians because what it documents is outside their experience. I hope I am wrong because the world needs more Christians who will follow the example of those in the movie. A relative watched it with her husband the day it was available online and she told me she wanted to pray for everyone after she saw it. I hope everyone will respond in a similar manner. I know I have been challenged.

ABOUT THE FILM:
Can the Holy Spirit Direct a Movie?
In this fast-paced documentary from the director of the popular films Finger of God, Furious Love, and Father of Lights, Darren Wilson sets out to make a movie that is completely led by the Holy Spirit. No plan, no script, no safety net — just go wherever he feels the Spirit leading him to try and discover the adventure God has for him.
Whether it’s the riches of Monte Carlo, a heavy metal concert, or the oldest city in world, the result is a film that not only challenges and excites, but also reveals a God who is far more alive and active than you ever imagined.
The movie features big names such as Lenny Kravitz, Brian “Head” Welch, Bill Johnson, Michael W. Smith, Todd White, Meredith Andrews, DeVon Franklin, William P. Young, Phil Vischer, and many more!
