Be Still My Soul by Joanne Bischof

MY REVIEW:

I had been reading some positive comments about “Be Still My Soul” and was eager to read it for myself. When I saw it offered on the Blogging For Books program I was happy to have a chance to review it.

Once again I have been privileged to read the debut novel of an author I plan to add to my ever-growing library. “Be Still My Soul” will not be the last book I read by Joann Bischof. Her willingness to tackle difficult topics and to handle them in a realistic manner was just one aspect that made this book such a good one. Bischof has a way with words that made the chapters flow. I liked the way her characters matured both emotionally and spiritually as the book progressed. I also appreciated its redemptive message that provides hope for even the most undeserving.

I’ll admit that I didn’t particularly care for Gideon through most of the book but was happy with the conclusion of the story. I did like Lonnie a bit better but at times I became a little frustrated with her decisions. Good supporting characters added a depth to the story that enhanced its enjoyment.

I loved “Be Still My Soul” and can’t wait for the next offering in the Cadence of Grace series.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Be Still My Soul Gideon only ever cared about himself. Now that Lonnie is his wife, will he ever be worthy of her heart?

Night’s chill tickled her skin. Lonnie pressed her hands together and glanced up. He was even more handsome up close. Having grown up the shy, awkward daughter of Joel Sawyer, she’d hardly spoken to any boy, let alone the one who had mothers whispering warnings in their daughter’s ears and fathers loading shotguns.

Pretty Lonnie Sawyer is shy and innocent, used to fading into the background within her family, and among the creeks and hollows of the Appalachian hills. Though her family is poor and her father abusive, she clings to a quiet faith.  But when handsome ladies’ man and bluegrass musician Gideon O’Riley steals a kiss, that one action seals her fate.

Her father forces her into a hasty marriage with Gideon—a man she barely knows and does not love. Equally frustrated and confused by his new responsibilities, Gideon yearns for a fresh start, forcing  Lonnie on an arduous journey away from her home in Rocky Knob.

Her distant groom can’t seem to surrender his rage at the injustice of the forced matrimony or give Lonnie any claim in his life.  What will it take for Gideon to give up his past, embrace Lonnie’s God, and discover a hope that can heal their two fractured hearts?

Set in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia at the turn of the last century, Be Still My Soul weaves together the threads of yearning, hope, and redemption to form a tale Joanne hopes will touch your heart, stir your senses, and evoke a greater understanding for the majestic God who created every hue and surface of the mountains I hold so dear.

Flight of the Earls by Michael Reynolds

This week, the

Christian Fiction Blog Alliance

is introducing

Flight of the Earls

B&H Books (January 1, 2013)

by
Michael Reynolds

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Michael K. Reynolds is the writer and producer of Emmy and Telly Award-winning film campaigns and has more than two decades of experience in fiction, journalism, copywriting, and documentary production. He owns Global Studio, a marketing agency, and is also an active leader in church and business, speaking in both ministry and corporate settings. Michael lives with his wife and three children in Reno, Nevada.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

It’s 1846 in Ireland. When her family’s small farm is struck by famine, Clare Hanley and her younger brother, Seamus, set out across the ocean to the Promised Land of America.

Five years prior, Clare’s older sister Margaret and her Uncle Tomas emigrated in similar fashion and were not to be heard from again. But Clare must face her fears as she lands in the coming-of-age city of New York. There she discovers love, adventure, tragedy, and a terrible secret which threatens to destroy her family and all she believes.

Flight of the Earls is the first book in a historical novel trilogy based on Irish immigration in the 1840s.

divider2MY REVIEW:

Apparently my knowledge of Irish history is sadly lacking because I failed to understand the significance of the title of this book until near its end when there was a brief mention of the historical event(s) that inspired it. A bit of the original history at the beginning to set up the story might have helped those like me whose Irish education was neglected. Perhaps I place too much importance on a title but I was tempted to pass this one by and that would have been a shame. Fortunately my lack of knowledge did nothing to prevent my enjoyment of Flight of the Earls.

Flight of the Earls is a well-written historical novel that makes the Irish immigration of the mid-1800’s come to life. The pages of the novel are filled with drama, action, secrets, betrayal, and romance. I was quickly drawn into the lives of Clare and Seamus and eagerly followed their journey from famine torn Ireland to a land of opportunity in America. I experienced tragedies and triumphs, disappointments and accomplishments with them as they struggled to find their way in their new home. Despite hardship and tragedy, Clare’s determination, the love of a good man, and finally her surrender to the Lord helped her to overcome the obstacles in her life.

Flight of the Earls is definitely a must-read for all historical fiction lovers.

A Home in Drayton Valley by Kim Vogel Sawyer

MY REVIEW:

“A Home in Drayton Valley” is historical fiction set in the late 1800’s. After her aunt’s death, Tarsie Raines sees little hope for anything but a miserable life in New York City. She is especially concerned for her good friend Mary whose health is failing fast. Dreaming of a new life in Kansas after reading about it in a book, Tarsie encourages her friend to make the trip. Mary’s husband agrees but only to escape gambling debts he cannot pay. The unlikely group set out for Kansas and encounter multiple trials and tragedy along the way.

Although somewhat slow-moving at times, “A Home in Drayton Valley” was interesting and held my attention well. I did not particularly care for the character of Joss but will admit that I was happy to see his change of heart and attitude by the end of the story. Tarsie was a strong character whose loyalty and determination could be admired. Personally, I thought the highlights of the story were the scenes that involved Simon and Ruth. Simon’s wisdom pretty much overshadowed everything else for me.

As always, I enjoyed the spiritual lessons woven throughout Sawyer’s story and how well she illustrated that even the worst person can change with God’s help.

Betrayal by Robin Lee Hatcher

MY REVIEW:

I have always enjoyed Robin Lee Hatcher’s books, especially those with historical western settings so I was excited to have the opportunity to review “Betrayal”, the second book in the Where the Heart Lives series. Having recently read “Belonging”, the first of the series, I was primed and ready for “Betrayal”. I was not to be disappointed.

“Betrayal” features Hugh, the oldest Brennan sibling and Julia Grace, a young widow who offers Hugh food and lodging in return for help with chores while his lame horse has a chance to heal. Both Hugh and Julia are wary of other people due to their personal histories. Each of them has good reason to distrust others because they have each been betrayed by those who should have their best interests at heart. However something draws them together despite their misgivings and their pasts. Slowly they learn to trust each other and their friends and neighbors.

A well-paced plot and well-rounded characters make “Betrayal” a delight to read. I enjoyed getting to know Julia and Hugh as they matured in their faith and learned how to forgive the ones who had betrayed them. The story had a good blend of drama, action, and romance that moved steadily toward a satisfying ending. I am now eager to read the final installment of this series, “Beloved” to discover the story of Diana, the other Brennan sister.

I recommend “Betrayal” to all who enjoy Christian historical romance, particularly those who like myself enjoy those with western settings.

This book was provided for review by Thomas Nelson Publisher’s BookSneeze program.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

The latest historical romance from award-winning author Robin Lee Hatcher and the second book in the Where the Heart Lives series, Betrayal will take readers to the high desert of western Wyoming, through the crags of the Rocky Mountains, and into the hearts of two seekers learning to trust God’s love no matter the circumstances.

It’s the turn of the twentieth century and drifter Hugh Brennan is a man well acquainted with betrayal. Hugh finds himself drawn to the attractive widow, Julia, yet when he looks into her eyes, he recognizes the same hurt that haunts him.

Julia Grace has little reason to trust men, but she’s going to have to trust someone if she’s to keep her ranch from the clutches of her dead husband’s half-brother. Is it possible God had a hand in bringing Hugh to her door?

Every Perfect Gift by Dorothy Love

MY REVIEW:

Believing it is God’s will, Sophie has returned to Hickory Ridge, Tennessee to fulfill her dream of owning her own newspaper. Despite her memories of an unhappy childhood at the orphanage where she felt lonely and rejected due to her uncertain lineage, Sophie has managed to form a close friendship with Gillie and even hopes for the possibility of a romantic relationship with Ethan Heyward. Ethan, the young partner, designer, and builder of Blue Smoke, an exclusive resort said to rival those in Saratoga, is also very attracted to Sophie but he has his own dark secrets that continue to haunt him. Will it be possible for the two of them to overcome their pasts to build a fresh future together?

Dorothy Love’s characters are so full of life that they seem to want to step out of the pages of the book. From the primary characters of Sophie and Ethan, to Sophie’s new friend Gillie, her old friend Robbie, and a host of other townspeople, each adds a unique perspective to the story. The plot progresses at a fairly even pace with highs and lows that reflect normal day-to-day life. A strong message on forgiveness permeates the story and I found the ending quite satisfying.

As with the previous two Hickory Ridge novels, I also recommend “Every Perfect Gift”. It would be an excellent gift choice for lovers of historic Christian romance.

The White Glove Society has all but destroyed the Greenwood District, home to the affluent blacks in Tulsa. Now those who have survived are trying to recover what is left including Billy Ray Matthias and Benny Freeman. Billy Ray and Benny are engaged but Benny is hesitant to set a date. Jordan Franks, Benny’s ex-fiancee shows up in Tulsa and Benny is confronted with the memories and emotions of the crippling break up she experienced with Jordan. She must decide whether she will stand and face her past or allow it to drive her back into the dark place she’d grown used to before meeting Billy Ray. Billy Ray’s attempts to keep Benny from running away are challenged by his own struggles as he wrestles with God’s call on his life to preach.

DP Dooley, plagued by a past that prompted him to turn from God and become a government agent, is in a turmoil as he wars against enemies seen and unseen. Internally, he fights against the darkness of his soul as the anger and resentment he has harbored against God for most of his life wears him down. Externally, he continues to fight against the threats of the bigoted White Gloves Society, which is growing and trying to increase its racist activities.

The once hard-edged racial views of Chief Tobias Parnell have noticeably dulled and he no longer enjoys the favor of the White Glove Society. Teaming up with Dooley, Chief Parnell fights against illegal racketeering, bootlegging and racial crimes.
A new brotherhood forms in Tulsa, the interdenominational Christian clergyman (ICCA). Braving the social struggles of Tulsa, five clergymen attempt to and bring together God’s people, regardless of race, economic status, gender, ethnicity and even doctrine.
