MY REVIEW:

As the plague of human trafficking has become more and more visible in the news recently, I appreciate the fact that several Christian fiction authors have taken the initiative to include this subject in their novels to bring it to the attention of a larger audience. In my opinion Tanya Stowe has done a superb job by tastefully yet realistically describing the horrors of this evil and at the same time managing to introduce a ray of hope for the victims.

Her story features a young domestic violence counselor, a former victim herself, who discovers an alarming number of missing girls from the nearby reservation. Motivated to get to the bottom of it, Dulcie Parker soon finds her efforts blocked at every turn and realizes that there is no one she can trust except for Deputy Austin Turner. Working together the pair finds themselves besieged by danger even as they get closer to unearthing the truth. The problem is, will Dulcie’s dedication to stopping the traffickers lead to her becoming another victim.

I enjoyed Vanished in the Mountains with it’s riveting plot, strong characters, escalating suspense, endearing romance, and strong message of faith. I will definitely keep my eyes open for more books by this author.

When my children were very young, my husband and I took a trip to Colorado for a family reunion. After the reunion we traveled through Colorado to see the sights. We stopped in Silverton and my sister and I took my young son and daughter down the narrow-gauge railroad to Durango. Riding the swaying train down slopes covered in pine trees with the rushing white water of the Animas River below, I knew I’d write about the area someday. Many years later my husband and I took our first “kid-less” vacation in our motorhome. We stayed in a campground on the Navajo Nation next to Canyon de Chelly. We had no running water or electricity and that night, a storm blew in from the west. We watched the sky change to hues of purple and pink and then sat mesmerized as lightning strikes crossed the magnificent valley. Once again, I planted the scenes in my mind, determined to write about them one day. Little did I know both vacations would combine into one story. Lethal Intent by Cara Putman

MY REVIEW:

I love Cara Putman’s skillful combination of the law, suspense, romance, and faith. I actually prefer her succinct explanations of the legal process which tells me just enough for me to understand without making me feel as though I’ve been through a university class on law. Vivid description, excellent dialogue, natural friendships, and true-to-life frailties combined with realistic action and danger made Lethal Intent a true page turner.

Caroline Bragg’s longtime close friendship with Brandon Lancaster has just begun to look as though it might develop into more when she accepts a new job as the lawyer for a pharmaceutical research firm. On her very first day on the job she discovers one indirect connection of Brandon to her firm through a child from his foster care facility who is a candidate for experimental treatment. Later she also discovers that Brandon has invested in the firm and she fears their relationship may create a conflict of interest. Aside from that more than one death connected to the firm and several things that do not add up puzzles Caroline and she is determined to get to the bottom of it.

Lethal Intent is another fully absorbing novel from Putman that keeps this author on my must read list. I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend it and all her previous novels to readers who enjoy legal suspense novels.

Cold Case Pursuit by Dana Mentink

MY REVIEW:

I always know that I may as well settle in and make myself comfortable when I pick up a new book by Dana Mentink because I will not want to move for awhile. Her books are always guaranteed to keep me turning pages as quickly as possible because almost anything can and will happen at any moment. Not only is there ample action, danger, and suspense to hold my attention but the author never fails to create a convincing plot combined with a strong thread of faith. It also does not hurt that a dog or a child or even sometimes both are often included.

Cold Case Pursuit contains all of the above in spades. The villain is evil, creepy, and always seems to be one step ahead even while taunting Penny, one of his intended victims. Tyler was the perfect hero as he dedicated himself to protecting Penny and working hard to solve the case, even after a serious injury. He began by trying to be an encouragement to her but it was easy to see that a more serious relationship was in store for them.I enjoyed reading about the K9 division of the police force as well as examples of how they worked.

Do not allow the sweet cover image fool you into passing this book by. Despite the cute dog and child, Cold Case Pursuit has one of the most dastardly plots ever!

I love book covers with adorable children on them, don’t you? There’s something so angelic about those wee folks on the covers. I have two bear cubs myself, young adults now, and I love them devotedly. Tell you what though. Sometimes, just occasionally mind you, they were a wee bit naughty. Don’t tell anyone, but one reason I enjoyed writing Cold Case Pursuit so much is that hero Tyler is the single dad of a little girl named Rain who is….er…a handful. Sure, she’s adorable, but she’s prone to disobedience and the occasional tendency to flush things down the toilet. So in addition to the edge of your seat pursuit of a murderous clown killer, there are the shenanigans of a precocious preschooler, a highly trained yet distractible police K-9, and a romance that doesn’t exactly run smoothly. Fun to write? You betcha! I hope you enjoy coming along with me on this True Blue adventure!

All That We Carried by Erin Bartels

MY REVIEW:

As a title, All That We Carried serves a double purpose in my opinion. It literally describes the heavy backpacks the sisters struggled with during their hike and the emotional burdens that also weighed them down.It was especially appropriate that Olivia carried the heaviest pack for most of the hike since she was the sister who wrestled an enormous amount of guilt and forgiveness. I was happy to see that the sisters did mostly resolve many of their issues by the end but would have loved to read some more constructive dialogue between them rather than their constant bickering when they did talk.

While mildly interesting in places, it was a struggle for me to wade through this book. After losing my own mother just less than a year ago, it is difficult for me to imagine going for years with next to no communication with my sisters. We help each other get through the hard times and celebrate the good times together when we can.I am also not a hiker and found the minute details of the sisters’ hike to be somewhat boring. It is possible that in the midst of a simply terrible, horrible, depressing year that I just need to read something a bit more entertaining.

And just who was the Josh guy who kept showing up just when the sisters needed him and dispensed quite a bit of spiritual wisdom before disappearing again? Was he a real person or was he an angel or Jesus type supernatural being sent to help? I was never quite sure of that.

There were definitely some heavy themes that would leave most readers something to ponder afterwards.This might even be a good choice for book clubs because I can imagine quite a few good discussions that might be inspired by it.

Active Defense by Lynette Eason

MY REVIEW:

Heather Fontaine had suspected she had a stalker for awhile but when someone broke into her home, she decided that she was putting the safety of her friends into danger so she disappeared. Fiercely independent, Heather tried not to let herself get too close to people and certainly would never ask anyone for help. Turns out she actually had another stalker in Travis Walker whose career was in security, only Travis was secretly keeping watch over Heather in order to protect her.

As in all novels by Lynette Eason, the suspense and danger ramped up with each chapter if not by the page. Who was stalking Heather and for what reason and how far were they willing to go? Plenty of action and unexpected twists kept me turning those pages and the well blended elements of faith and romance made it all the sweeter. It was fun seeing characters from earlier books in the series as well as meeting new ones in Active Defense.

As always, I recommend this book as well as any book written by this author. It stands on its own quite well but would be even more enjoyable if the series were read in proper order. Pick up your own copy soon!

Restoring Fairhaven by Carolyn Miller

MY REVIEW:

On our last visit to Merriweather Island, readers spend some time with Samantha Green who has returned to the island to run her father’s landscaping company while he recover from serious health issues. Hoping to make her father proud of her Samantha accepts a huge landscaping makeover job for the neglected estate of famous author Max Fairhaven who has become quite reclusive and who hopes all the outside activity will not interfere with his writing. Who would ever expect the sparks to fly with the casual landscaper with dirt under her fingernails and the oh-so-proper Englishman?

Restoring Fairhaven was entertaining up to the very last page. I thoroughly enjoyed the often clever and witty conversations between Max and Sam and loved witnessing their growing friendship and attraction. It was fun to see Max gradually come out of his shell under Sam’s influence and in turn seeing how Sam was able to become more trusting due to Max’s acceptance. A beautiful setting, real life situations and problems, and evidence of an unseen Hand working in their lives makes this novel a delightful read.

I’m a long time lover of gardens, plants, flowers and trees! I’m married to a horticulturalist, who once upon a time worked at Lyme Park, the site of Mr. Darcy’s magnificent Pemberley from the 1995 production of Pride and Prejudice, and who has also worked at Kew Gardens in England.

Some of my garden and plant highlights include visiting Blarney Castle’s Poison Garden in Ireland, New Zealand’s Hamilton Gardens, Dunrobin Castle in Scotland, Frederik Meijer Gardens in Michigan, the redwoods of Yosemite, California, Butchart Gardens in Victoria Island, Canada, and Jardin Botanique in Montreal, Canada.
