A Place in His Heart by Rebecca DeMarino – Litfuse Review

MY REVIEW:

Overall A Place in His Heart was a fairly interesting book with plenty of good historical information about life during that time frame, especially the different views of the Anglicans and Puritans and living conditions in the New World.

The book was very well written and it was obvious the author did her research. I loved all the details and even learned a few things. I did find it difficult to love the characters though. I thought Barnabas was a selfish jerk and never really understood why Mary loved him. His obsession with his late wife was extreme to say the least and his attitude toward Mary despicable. Despite my loss of patience with her for putting up with Barnabas, I did think Mary was a gem who went out of her way to demonstrate her love for others.

A Stitch and a Prayer by Eva Gibson – Litfuse Review

MY REVIEW:

I have enjoyed most of the novels in the Quilts of Love series so far but I have to be honest and admit that “A Stitch and a Prayer” fell a bit short for my personal preferences. For one thing, I was never really able to connect with the characters. They never quite came to life for me. I also had a problem with the way Florence’s husband Will left her virtually alone and pregnant to  fend for herself in the wilderness in view of her previous medical history.

“A Stitch and a Prayer” did have a few moments of interest and historical background and I enjoyed the quilting details. I did like how other characters pitched in to support and take care of Florence and how her faith was strengthened as she was forced to depend on the Lord.

Pride, Prejudice and Cheese Grits By Mary Jane Hathaway

MY REVIEW:

Well, I will get it over with and confess that I am not a Jane Austen fan. I don’t dislike her books – I am just not sure if I have ever read any. I do now have several of them on my Kindle but it is anyone’s guess when I will find time to read them. For that reason, I may have missed subtle references to any Austen novels, particularly Pride and Prejudice.

Despite my unfamiliarity with Austen novels, I did thoroughly enjoy “Pride, Prejudice and Cheese Grits”. As a born and bred Southerner, I definitely picked up on all the southern peculiarities exhibited by various characters. As a history lover, I liked the occupation of the two main characters and found their disagreements amusing. The contrast between feisty and informal Shelby and the all too proper Ransom was perfection. It was not too hard to guess that they would end up together despite their intentions otherwise.

A sweet romance, plenty of humor, and a subtle message of faith combined to make a highly entertaining read for a lazy summer evening.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Pride Prejudice and Cheese GritsThis hilarious Southern retelling of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice tells the story of two hard-headed Civil war historians who find that first impressions can be deceiving.

Shelby Roswell, a Civil War historian and professor, is on the fast track to tenure—that is, until her new book is roasted by the famous historian Ransom Fielding in a national review. With her career stalled by a man she’s never met, Shelby struggles to maintain her composure when she discovers that Fielding has taken a visiting professorship at her small Southern college.

Ransom Fielding is still struggling with his role in his wife’s accidental death six years ago and is hoping that a year at Shelby’s small college near his hometown of Oxford, Mississippi, will be a respite from the pressures of Ivy League academia. He never bargained for falling in love with the one woman whose career—and pride—he injured, and who would do anything to make him leave.

When these two hot-headed southerners find themselves fighting over the centuries-old history of local battles and antebellum mansions, their small college is about to become a battlefield of Civil War proportions.

With familiar and relatable characters and wit to spare, Pride, Prejudice and Cheese Grits shows you that love can conquer all…especially when pride, prejudice, love, and cheese grits are involved!

The Hatmaker’s Heart by Carla Stewart

MY REVIEW:

Set during the “Roaring 20’s” and the prohibition era, “The Hatmaker’s Heart” was particularly intriguing to me for its peek into what life was like during my grandmother’s younger years. Because of the vivid descriptions I could practically see the fashions of the day, hear the jazz musicians, and watch the dancers as they enjoyed a night out. I also got a pretty good look at the darker side of speakeasies and illegal alcohol as well as some of the more unpleasant men who frequented such places.

I really liked Nell, the principal character of “The Hatmaker’s Heart”. Not only was she extremely gifted at her chosen profession but she had a heart for others and made a concerted effort to believe the best about people, even to her disadvantage. Portraying Nell with a speech handicap was pure genius, especially the efforts she made to overcome it and the secrets about her past that were revealed during the process.  I spent much of the book wanting to warn Nell about her despicable boss who was using her talent to make a name for his business. The author did such a wonderful job with his description that I personally detested the man.

I loved everything about “The Hatmaker’s Heart” and plan to give it a prime spot on my keeper shelf.

Raptor 6 by Ronie Kendig

MY REVIEW:

Ronie has really upped the ante with “Raptor 6”. I promise you, her books just keep getting better with each one published.

As a military suspense, “Raptor 6” is top notch. Heart-stopping scenes had me holding my breath – afraid to keep reading but unable to stop. I knew that everything would probably work out just fine at the end . . . but would it? The perfectly paced plot keep me turning the pages (and losing sleep) until I reached the end. Convincing characters and lifelike dialogue combined with action, danger, suspense, and a touch of romance for the perfect novel. If I had a complaint, it would be the fact that at least one element of the story was unresolved and I have to wait for the next installment of the series to learn more.

I certainly hope that the real life men and women in our armed forces share the courage and integrity portrayed by Ronie’s characters. If they experience even a fraction of what the men and women were exposed to in this book, our country owes them far more respect and honor than what has been shown by our government and citizens recently.

“Raptor 6” is definitely a must read book. Don’t wait too long to pick up a copy.
